Being asleep and getting quality sleep aren't always the same thing. 😴

When talking with families, I don't just ask how long a child sleeps. I'm interested in how they're sleeping.

Things like frequent snoring, open-mouth sleeping, restless sleep, or consistently waking unrefreshed can be clues worth discussing with an appropriate healthcare provider.

Why does this matter in myofunctional therapy?

Because breathing, oral rest posture, tongue function, and sleep can overlap. A myofunctional evaluation may help identify functional patterns, while concerns about airway obstruction or sleep-disordered breathing may require evaluation by a physician or other appropriate specialist.

The goal isn't to diagnose a child from one symptom.

It's to notice patterns, ask better questions, and know when to look deeper.

🤍 Tonight, take a moment to notice how your child sleeps—not just whether they're asleep.

Save this post as a reminder of what to look for.

"They’re just a mouth breather.”

It's easy to think of mouth breathing as simply a habit—especially when a child has been doing it for a long time.

But when I see persistent mouth breathing, I get curious.

Can they comfortably breathe through their nose?
How are they sleeping?
Where does their tongue naturally rest?
Is something making nasal breathing difficult?

Mouth breathing itself doesn't tell us the whole story, and myofunctional therapy isn't necessarily the answer for every child.

Sometimes the first step is simply recognizing the pattern, asking why, and determining whether further evaluation or collaboration with another provider is appropriate.

🤍 Don't just notice the habit. Understand the function behind it.

Save this for the next time you notice an open-mouth resting posture.

If you're here because you're looking for answers, welcome. 🤍

Maybe your child breathes through their mouth.

Maybe they snore.

Maybe feeding has been challenging.

Maybe you've been told, "They'll grow out of it," but you still have questions.

At MiYo Flow, we believe every child deserves to be seen as an individual. My goal isn't to create fear or convince every family that therapy is the answer—it's to help you understand how your child functions and, when needed, guide you toward the next best step.

Through education, thoughtful evaluations, and individualized care, I'm here to help families better understand breathing, oral function, and healthy development.

I'm so glad you're here. 🤍

People often think therapy starts when someone walks into the clinic.

But successful therapy happens between appointments.

The habits practiced at home, the consistency, and the small daily changes are what lead to meaningful progress over time.

That's why home programs are such an important part of the journey.

Progress isn't built in one hour a week.

It's built in the everyday moments in between.

During an evaluation, I'm looking at much more than teeth.

I assess:

👃 Breathing patterns

👅 Tongue mobility and posture

👄 Lip function

🦷 Jaw movement

💧 Swallowing patterns

😴 Sleep-related concerns (through your history and discussion)

Each piece helps us understand the bigger picture of your child's oral function.

Because every child deserves an individualized approach.

Swallowing is one of the most common things we do every day—yet most people never think about how they swallow.

Each swallow is a coordinated movement involving your tongue, lips, jaw, and facial muscles. Because we swallow hundreds of times each day, those movement patterns are repeated over and over.

In myofunctional therapy, we evaluate how those muscles are working together. If a swallowing pattern is inefficient, therapy may help improve coordination and support healthier oral function as part of an individualized treatment plan.

Sometimes it's not about learning something new...
It's about retraining a pattern your body repeats every single day.

👅 Healthy function starts with understanding the basics.

Have you ever paid attention to how you swallow?

One of my favorite parts of working with kids is that progress often happens through play.

While it may look like we're just having fun with a balloon, we're actually working on skills that support healthy oral function, breathing, coordination, and body awareness.

Children learn best when they feel safe, engaged, and successful.

That's why my goal is always to make therapy feel encouraging—not intimidating.

Sometimes the biggest improvements begin with the simplest activities.

🤍 Learning through play is still learning.

One of the greatest benefits of evaluating infants isn't finding something "wrong."

It's understanding how they're growing and supporting healthy function from the very beginning.

During an infant evaluation, I'm looking at more than just the mouth. I'm observing how the lips, tongue, jaw, breathing, and oral movements work together to support feeding and development.

Every baby is unique.

Some babies simply need time.

Others may benefit from extra support.

The goal isn't to create worry—it's to guide healthy growth and give families the information they need to make informed decisions.

✨ Early evaluation is about understanding function.

🤍 If you've ever wondered whether an evaluation would be helpful for your baby, I'd be happy to answer your questions.

The lips play an important role in oral function, too. 👄

Depending on a person's needs, exercises like the button pull may be used to help improve lip strength, endurance, and coordination as part of a personalized treatment plan.

There isn't one exercise that's right for everyone—that's why therapy is individualized based on function, not just symptoms.
