PE tubes are tiny ventilation tubes placed in the eardrum to help children with frequent ear infections or persistent fluid behind the eardrum. They improve ventilation, reduce pressure, and can help restore hearing.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is parents taking a child with PE tubes to an urgent care or emergency room for ear irrigation when the ear starts draining or becomes clogged with earwax.

Please don't.

Ear irrigation can force water through the tube into the middle ear, increasing irritation and potentially making an infection worse.

The safest approach is careful ear cleaning under direct visualization using microscopy and microsuction by a trained professional. This allows the ear canal to be cleaned without pushing debris deeper or introducing water into the middle ear.

After the ear is cleaned, antibiotic ear drops are often the next step if an infection or drainage is present.

A patient came to my clinic the same day after visiting urgent care for ear irrigation. Despite irrigation, the earwax impaction was still completely blocking the ear canal.

This is one of the reasons I do not use ear irrigation at None of Your EARSwax. Ear irrigation can leave wax behind, push it deeper, cause pain, dizziness, and in some cases increase the risk of infection or eardrum injury.

I use earwax removal under direct visualization with specialized instruments and suction so I can safely see exactly what I'm removing.

If you have clogged ears, muffled hearing, ear pressure, or impacted earwax, there are better options than flushing your ears.
