study one: University of New Mexico, Toxicological Sciences, February 2024. 62 human tested. microplastics found in all 62. concentrations ranging from 6.5 to 790 micrograms per gram of tissue. , the plastic in your water bottles, made up 54% of what was found. PVC, a known , was another 10%.
study two: same institution, same journal, May 2024. 23 human samples tested. microplastics in every single one. average concentration 329 micrograms per gram of tissue. a higher concentration in the samples correlated with lower s***m count. The men in this study averaged 35 years old, meaning their exposure started before plastics were even this widespread so the researchers flagged that the impact on younger generations is likely even more severe.
there is currently no established safe level of microplastics in human tissue. what that means is we are accumulating something we have no threshold for. that’s what unsettled me most.
