This past Tuesday, the National Keratoconus Foundation took an important step toward improving how people at risk for keratoconus are identified and followed.

At today’s CDC ICD-10-CM Coordination and Maintenance Committee meeting, Marjan Farid, MD, professor of ophthalmology and director of cornea, cataract, and refractive surgery at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute at UC Irvine, presented the clinical case for establishing a dedicated ICD-10-CM code for “keratoconus suspect.”

Why does this matter?

Advances in corneal imaging now allow eye care providers to identify suspicious findings before a patient meets the criteria for established keratoconus. These patients may have abnormal corneal findings, a family history of keratoconus, Down syndrome, chronic eye rubbing, or other risk factors that warrant closer surveillance.

Yet there is currently no ICD-10-CM code that accurately identifies them.

That matters because keratoconus often begins during adolescence and early adulthood and can progress during a critical period of educational, occupational, and social development. Today, treatments are available that can halt disease progression. Identifying and monitoring patients earlier therefore has the potential to change the trajectory of their disease.

As Dr. Farid explained to the committee, “keratoconus suspect” is already recognized and used in clinical practice. A dedicated code would allow these patients to be documented more accurately, monitored appropriately, and represented in electronic health records, clinical registries, research, and public health data.

NKCF is proud to advocate for a coding system that reflects the realities of contemporary keratoconus care.

Because when it comes to progressive disease, identifying risk earlier creates an opportunity to protect vision sooner.
