Why is Dr. Nedeau deadhanging? πͺπ½
Handgrip strength is one of the most robust and well-validated biomarkers of overall health and longevity, with extensive evidence linking it to all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, cancer, respiratory disease, and functional decline. The dead hang exercise, while less studied directly in the longevity literature, serves as a practical method to develop grip and upper-body strength. The landmark PURE study of nearly 140,000 participants across 17 countries demonstrated that each 5 kg reduction in grip strength was associated with a 16% increase in all-cause mortality and a 17% increase in cardiovascular mortality β notably, grip strength was a stronger predictor of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality than systolic blood pressure. A 16-year European cohort showed that higher grip strength reduced all-cause mortality risk by 30β40% regardless of smoking status, alcohol consumption, low physical activity, or sleep disturbances. The greatest survival benefits (43β64% risk reduction) were seen in individuals who combined higher grip strength with healthy behaviors.
