Soul Child Awakenings Combining the healing arts with African & Latin indigenous practices to support holistic wellness. Alaffia -

Welcome to Soul Child Awakenings! Asé!

My name is Nicolette Paige, and I am the owner, founder, and Priestess of this holistic wellness practice. At Soul Child Awakenings, we believe in empowering individuals on their spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional journeys. Through the integration of indigenous spiritual practices, we aim to guide our clients towards finding healing, peace, and purpose in their lives. My own path towards S

oul Child Awakenings started back in 2008 when I began offering tarot readings professionally and delved into the study of African Spiritual Sciences. Since I was a child, I have possessed a spiritual gift for healing and communicating with the spirit realm. It is through these gifts that I humbly assist others in discovering their own personal power and finding the path to healing, transformation, and purpose. In my work, I frequently incorporate core spiritual practices such as Curanderismo, Hoodoo, Brujeria, Vodou, Rastafari, and the religious practices of Ifa. In 2020, I was initiated into the Ifa religion, which has its roots in Vodou, Lucumi, and Candomble. During my initiation, I was given the spiritual name "Larada Dìdan Ìmolęìna Aye Afrika," which translates to "She Whose Healing Shines Light On The World." While my journey is influenced by the wisdom of these indigenous spiritual practices, it is ultimately guided by the love and light within my soul and the wisdom of my ancestors. The name "Soul Child Awakenings" holds deep significance for me. From my teenage years, I have always understood myself as a soul experiencing this human existence. I believe that we all have the capacity to tap into infinite knowledge and wisdom, ensuring that our journey of learning and growth is everlasting. I have always felt a connection to a higher power, seeing my soul as an extension or child of this divine energy. To honor this understanding, I began referring to myself as "Soul Child" and even got a tattoo of the name on my neck. The term "Awakenings" represents the profound moments of realization and transformation that we can experience in our lives. One of the most crucial awakenings, in my belief, is that of our inner child, or what I like to refer to as, our inner soul child. By awakening this aspect of ourselves, we can heal past wounds, learn from our experiences, rediscover the simple joys of life often forgotten in adulthood, and ultimately live with purpose. In 2024, Soul Child Awakenings became a collective of practitioners of diverse skills that share the same purpose of uplifting individuals through ancestral healing, holistic wellness, and indigenous wisdoms. That same year, the Soul Child Awakenings Temple Of Imole opened in Kansas City, providing holistic wellness services to the community and a botanica where people can shop goods for the body & soul created by Soul Child Awakenings practitioners. I invite you to join us at Soul Child Awakenings and embark on a transformative journey of self-discovery, healing, and empowerment. Together, we can tap into your inner power, connect with ancestral wisdom, and uncover the path that leads to true happiness and fulfillment. Thank you for visiting Soul Child Awakenings. Feel free to email me at [email protected] for questions or to inquire about services. May we forever be guided by the wisdom of our ancestors, and may we always remember that the most powerful magic one can tap into is their own. With much peace, love, and gratitude…

~ Larada Dìdan Ìmolęìna Aye Afrika

This weekend was the first Soul Child Awakenings School of Spiritual Science class of our year-long apprenticeship course!

Our first class focused on self-awareness, decolonizing the mind, etymology, shadow work, and inner child journeying. I believe these are important foundations to begin with because, to engage in deep spiritual work, we must develop a strong sense of self-awareness, recognize how history and the world around us have shaped us, and have an understanding of psychology.

We must also recognize that we do not experience the spiritual realm as it is, but as we are.

Our first gathering conjured some insightful discussions. Everyone participating in this year’s course is a wellness practitioner coming from a different path, so bringing our perspectives and experiences together adds even more depth to the journey.

One of the things I appreciate about teaching is that I am also learning from my students. I truly enjoy participating in the homework assignments with them! For our first assignment, we’ll be visiting religious and spiritual spaces we’ve never experienced before, while also beginning to work intentionally with the phases of the moon as an ally in our personal development.

I’m very excited about the journey ahead and to see how we all evolve throughout this year together.

I love that many of our local grocery stores here in Kansas City carry spiritual candles! Truly, besides the natural world all around us, local grocery stores have just about everything needed for spiritual work.

When I see these candles, I see the story of our Indigenous spiritual traditions that survived colonialism. I see the story of how spiritual traditions from different cultures came together and evolved into new traditions.

I also see the pain and unhealed wounds that humanity is still working through today—hence the majority of the saints depicted on these candles, as well as many images of Jesus, being white. Even the candle representing the Seven African Powers has images of white Catholic saints.

Our Lady of Regla offers an especially powerful example. Traditionally depicted as a Black Madonna holding a dark-skinned Christ child, over time her image has been represented in different ways, including depictions in which the Christ child appears white and others in which both Mary and the Christ child are depicted with lighter skin. Her story also carries a longstanding connection to North Africa through religious tradition, and over time, as her devotion traveled and developed in Cuba, Our Lady of Regla became associated with Yemayá, the African orisha who rules over the ocean.

I say all of this to say that if we are honoring Our Lady of Regla and the tradition from which her image comes, I believe her identity as a Black Madonna holding a dark-skinned Christ child deserves to be honored and preserved, not changed or erased. But since her image has changed over time, I also believe we benefit from asking why. The “why” can reveal so much about the beliefs and values societies have inherited and help us understand how some of the unhealthy ideologies that are still present today came to be.

I believe it's important to understand the truth and complexity of our history and not be fearful of addressing it, especially when we approach history from the perspective of: What can we learn from this? How can it help us recognize and heal generational trauma and unhealthy patterns that have been passed down? Truly and simply put, understanding our roots can help us heal and create a better world for future generations!

I laugh at the attempts to erase or sanitize difficult parts of our history. In 2025, for example, the Trump administration ordered the removal of the historic photograph known as "The Scourged Back", which shows the severely scarred back of an African man who had escaped slavery. The removal came amid a federal effort to eliminate historical presentations characterized as promoting “corrosive ideology” or “national shame.”

But what if, rather than looking away from painful history, we allowed ourselves to look at it together?? That photograph can open conversations about shared human suffering, generational trauma, ancestral healing, and how we might transform the wounds of our past rather than carrying them forward, while still honoring the truth of what happened.

And perhaps, if looking at that photograph brings up feelings of shame, we can become curious about why. What is that shame trying to teach us? Can we honor the sacred teachings that even an uncomfortable emotion like shame may carry, rather than turning away from it? Perhaps it can guide us toward looking at that photograph, and the history it represents, with respect for the truth, compassion, love, humility, and an open heart and mind. Not so that we remain stuck in shame, but so that we can allow the wisdom of shame to guide us forward.

Truly, I believe the sacred truths and wisdom held within our hearts can never be erased. They may appear to be erased, but just as nature has a way of growing through concrete, truth has a way of finding its way back to the surface. I think of my Mexica ancestors, who kept fires continuously burning within their communities as a representation of the soul of the community and their sacred relationship and devotion to the natural world within and around them. Even when those fires were physically extinguished through colonization, the fire itself continued to burn brightly within the hearts of their descendants. And generations later, here we are, still carrying that fire.

One day, I would love to give a history lesson right inside the grocery store about the meaning and history held within these spiritual candles. There is so much history sitting right there on those shelves! The approach I would take would be honest and respectful, grounded in compassion and radical love, from my sacred heart to the community.

And perhaps...as a bruja and a woman whose ancestors live through me.. I can work a little *sprinkles some good juju on the roads ahead* magic of my own and inspire change, even in something as seemingly small as the images on these candles, so that what we place on our shelves honors and more accurately shines a light on the truth of our sacred roots. 🖤✨️

In my spiritual practice, it’s important for me to be as Earth-conscious and sustainable as possible. 🌱 Here’s a little look at how I repurpose and dispose of materials after completing a spiritual working.

Happy birthday to my abuelita, the woman whose prayers have covered me since I was born!

A woman of God whose home nourished my heart growing up and helped my eyes see the magic in the world. She is a keeper of plants, a collector of unique bottles, feathers, shells, stones, and bones. Sound familiar?? 🤔😍🥰

My abuelita is where my big heart comes from. She is the descendant of immigrant parents from Mexico who taught her how to love—something she has happily continued to pass down through generations. She is a prayer warrior who taught me the importance of keeping God first.

At the age of 82, she still happily makes me burritos to this day!!!

When I was a child, she gifted me my first rosary, which once belonged to her mother and now sits beautifully on one of my altars at home. Growing up, she would read me passages from the Bible to ensure that I would have a spiritual compass engraved in my heart.

I am proud to be the granddaughter of a woman who represents the true meaning of what it means to be an abuelita. She has truly been a gift to all who know her.

If I ever created my own oracle deck, there would absolutely be a card called Abuelita—a card representing prayer, unconditional love, nourishment, wisdom, faith, and the sacred traditions we carry forward through generations. And without a doubt, it would be inspired by her!

Feliz cumpleaños, Abuelita! 🇲🇽🌹💕

I had such a great time presenting at the Breaking the Stigma Conference, hosted by the Young Latino Professionals of Kansas City!

It was a beautiful day centered around mental health, wellness, culture, healing, and community. Along with my presentation, La Limpia: Exploring the Healing Art of Spiritual Cleansing, there were other amazing presenters speaking on healthy brain-building habits, integrating art therapy on the go, managing stress, and returning to the sacred through understanding Indigenous practices.

There was great food, wonderful vendors, and good vibes!!

Y’all already know… I had to get myself some books. 😂📚 I can never resist adding a few more to the collection!

Grateful to have been a part of a space bringing our community together to learn, heal, connect, and continue breaking the stigma surrounding mental health. ✨
