My goal this year was to post monthly recaps. I'm really loving this use of social media, a way to slow down for a minute and think about the past 30 days.

August was full of flowers, specifically my favorite flower, marigolds. I started the month with a stop by .acre.flowers, whose flower cart bouquets never disappoint. We filled the mini van with plants for our garden and landscape at the new house. A friend dropped off a welcome-to-the-neighborhood gift of the most glorious marigolds. There was a tough week when I didn't have all these farm florals and did treat myself to a grocery store bouquet, which was pretty, but not as joyful as the marigolds. I peeled back the painters tape as I finished my floral mural. Meal prep was extra colorful, with more flowers in view.

My friend mentioned casually that she was going to "free hand" paint squiggles on her dining room wall. I guess that's all that's required to get me to say yes to painting a mural.

I've never painted a mural. I don't know what I'm doing. This process is deeply time consuming. It is absolutely a young person's job (my body hurts!). I will (probably) never do this again. Until the next person says "squiggles," and I jump to action.

But the other side of this is that I've actually found the process to be really good for me. It's mediative. It's quiet for hours, and you just keep painting. It can't be rushed, which is calming. And, in some tiny ways, it's teaching me to let go of some elements of perfection.

My goal for this year was to do more art for myself. Here I am, in true fashion, going as big and over-the-top as possible with that assignment. But, nothing shakes up old habits better than big, over-the-top moves.

My old house was about 2 blocks from my studio, so I could go home for lunch everyday. It was quiet at home at lunch time. I got to talk to my cat Dizzy (you know, check in on how her day was going). I could do a quick chore. Sometimes I'd watch a little TV. Best of all, I did not have to pack a lunch. I really hate packing a lunch.

My new house is a 15 minute drive each way, so I've been adjusting, but honestly, it hasn't been going well. I'm not a "gray area" kind of person, but I've been working on that. It is possible to really love something (new house) and also be disappointed by some aspects of it (packing lunches). But, this week I've started rotating around the city parks near my studio, and I'm realizing there may be some hope in this new routine after all.

I never thought I would lead a social media workshop. But that's exactly what I did last month.

When it comes to social media I've tried it all: the things they say you should do, and the trends they say you should follow. It's exhausting, and I hated every minute of it. Then I invested in a little (jk, it's huge) process called Brand Strategy and everything changed. I started showing up in all corners of my business, social media included, in ways that truly reflected who I am as the owner of my brand.

That's what we talked about last month at this local session, and it resonated with so many business owners, which felt great. I'm considering offering this as a virtual session. Comment below if you'd be interested in a free virtual meetup!
