AcadianaCares

AcadianaCares In 1985 a group of concerned citizens founded Acadiana CARES in response the affect that HIV was having on the area. Landry, St. Mary, and Vermilion parishes.

Acadiana CARES is the only non-profit, AIDS Service Organization for Region IV (Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Martin, and Vermilion) and its combined population of 584,118. Based in Lafayette, LA, it is a client-centered organization dedicated to empowering vulnerable communities affected by HIV/AIDS, homelessness, and substance abuse to change their lives by embracing a holistic appr

oach to a healthy and self-determined life. In the early 1980’s, volunteers in the Lafayette area came together in response to the AIDS epidemic to assist persons with HIV/AIDS. In 1985, this group formed an incorporated 501(c)3 non-profit named Lafayette C.A.R.E.S. (Concern for AIDS, Relief, Education, and Support). Their early mission was to provide education and services for the purpose of HIV/AIDS prevention and the care of those affected by HIV/AIDS. In 1995 – during its tenth anniversary, the group reorganized itself under a new name – Acadiana C.A.R.E.S. – to reflect the regional work done by the organization. At the regional level, Acadiana C.A.R.E.S. offered services to persons living with HIV/AIDS in the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH), Region IV – which includes Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Acadiana C.A.R.E.S. began providing HIV/AIDS Prevention and related services statewide in 1992, a service CARES still handles today. Today, the organization has expanded its services to include not only the battle against, the prevention of, and the treatment of HIV/AIDS, but also has programs designed for those in high-risk populations that don’t have HIV/AIDS in an attempt to help prevent the spread of the disease. As the group continues to evolve and grow, it has been essential for the group to have a public image that symbolizes this evolution. The MBA Program at the University of Louisiana – Lafayette as well as a senior-level marketing class have been working with Acadiana CARES to create a new and more aggressive strategic plan that addresses the ever-changing image and service-needs of the agency as well as suggestions to improve its public image and broaden the scope of citizens who know of the agency. CARES provides a wide range of services for persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in Public Health Region IV (consisting of Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Martin, and Vermilion parishes). The agency serves approximately 600 clients in a given calendar year. Current services include: Ryan White Part B Medical and Non-Medical Case Management, Transportation, HOPWA Tenant-Based Rental Assistance (TBRA), HOPWA Short Term Rent, Mortgage and Utility (STRMU) Assistance, Emergency, Transitional, and Permanent Supportive Housing, Mainstream Case Management, Psychosocial Support, Mental Health Therapy/Counseling, Substance Abuse Treatment/Counseling, Oral Health Care, Medication Assistance, Food Bank, Community Resource Referral, Application Assistance, Physician Linkage, Direct Emergency Financial Assistance, Educational Workshops, AIDS Hotline, Free HIV Testing, Prevention, Counseling and Referral, Partner Elicitation, Community Education, Outreach, and Printed Resources. The primary goals of Acadiana CARES are to:
• Improve the quality of life for those living with HIV/AIDS.
• Develop and expand relationships with other agencies that are able to provide needed services to those infected with HIV/AIDS.
• Increase social awareness and behavioral change in the high-risk populations.
• Increase awareness among those infected with HIV/AIDS of available services.
• Address the myriad issues that contribute to the HIV/AIDS

The community-led international health campaign called Undetectable = Untransmittable is on a mission to eliminate HIV as a global health threat. (A person living with HIV who is on treatment and maintains an undetectable viral load has zero risk of transmitting HIV to their sexual partners.)
Locally Acadiana Cares helps with:
–increased uptake of HIV testing
–improved treatment adherence and viral suppression

As a 501(c)3 non-profit, Acadiana Cares operates on funding from grants provided by national philanthropic and health organizations as well as federal, state, and local sources. Our board of directors and our board of advisors include local leaders (at least 51% of our board members must be current clients of our Primary Care Clinic) and all of our board members serve on a voluntary basis. Their commitment is real and it truly demonstrates our motto of “Community taking care of community.” Interested in volunteering? Visit: acadianacares.org

We had a great time talking to students at the LSU Eunice student health fair on Friday. So many took a genuine interest in hearing about the services AcadianaCares offers, and what kind of prevention methods are available. We were also surprised to learn how many nursing students have never heard of PrEP or PEP. Share this post to help spread the word about PrEP and PEP in our community.

PrEP is a once-daily (or twice annually as injection) medication that prevents HIV in HIV-negative people. PEP is an emergency medication taken after a possible exposure. Both are available through AcadianaCares' primary care + mental health clinic at Pride Plaza: 337.704.0787 for appointments.

Without stable housing and the essentials of life, it’s next to impossible to get healthy and self-sufficient. That’s why we incorporated transitional housing to support those undergoing health or recovery needs. A bed, a refrigerator to store your medicine, and a place to wash your clothes. It’s not magic, it’s necessary. That’s how we help ensure successful recoveries.

If the sun is shining, you’ll see Emily Neustrom, our on-staff certified horticulture therapist in our gardens and greenhouse with our clients and patients participating in purposeful and meaningful activities that track with their treatment plans. But if it’s raining, Emily pivots to art therapy classes – including culinary arts. She has written and coordinated grants (thanks Acadiana Center for the Arts!) that help our clients with life and job skills to carry them forward. And the fresh produce from our garden? Well, it finds its way to the kitchen of our on-site cafeteria. Talk about nurturing growth!

We've grown our services to include medical, recovery, housing, and a variety of support services which means today we serve more than 4,000 people annually. We're proud of that impact because it also means we're helping many who couldn't get care any other way. Learn more at acadianacares.org

Our does! Talk about convenient! When you’re not feeling well, the last thing you want to do after a doctor’s visit is go to the pharmacy. But here at Acadiana Cares’ primary care clinic, our in-house pharmacy is right down the hall and ready to fill your prescriptions with a smile. (And no long lines!)

In this podcast, our CEO Claude Martin takes you back through the history of Acadiana Cares and the story of some incredibly compassionate volunteers who began on a wing and a prayer. Maybe you forgot -- or maybe you never knew -- what was going on in the 1980s and the challenges HIV/AIDS patients faced. Grab a cup of coffee and watch.

We're so proud!
After our purchase and renovation of Pride Plaza at the corner of Willow and Pierce, the community surrounding this facility has embraced us with open arms. The name Pride Plaza was easy for us to embrace, of course. Developed in 1979 by Dr. Ernest Kinchen, Dr. Cedric Dauphin, Dr. Raphael Baranco, and Dr. Clinton Young (who returned to Lafayette and works with us today) is once again a convenient resource for primary healthcare in this neighborhood.
