September is Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS) Awareness Month!

Polycystic o***y syndrome (PCOS) is a condition in which the ovaries produce an abnormal amount of androgens, male s*x hormones that are usually present in women in small amounts. The name polycystic o***y syndrome describes the numerous small cysts (fluid-filled sacs) that form in the ovaries. However, some women with this disorder do not have cysts, while some women without the disorder do develop cysts.

PCOS is a serious genetic, hormone, metabolic and reproductive disorder that affects women and girls. It is the leading cause of female infertility and a precursor for other serious conditions including obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and endometrial cancer.

The aim of PCOS Awareness Month is to help improve the lives of those affected by PCOS and to help them to overcome their symptoms as well as prevent and reduce their risks for life-threatening related diseases.

Throughout this month, we’ll be posting more information about PCOS, to help bring awareness to this condition that affects so many women nationwide.

If you suspect you may have PCOS, have a PCOS diagnosis and need help managing your symptoms, or you simply want to consult with one of our doctors to learn more, please reach out! We would love to see you in our office.

World Breastfeeding Week is held August 1-7 each year.

You’ve probably heard the phrase, “Breast is best!” And it’s true. Breast milk is the best source of nutrition for most babies.

Breastfed babies have a lower risk of asthma, obesity, type 1 diabetes, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Breastfed babies are also less likely to have ear infections and stomach bugs.

Breastfeeding has health benefits for the mother too! Some cancers, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure are less common among women who breastfeed.

While we know that breastfeeding is not always easy, we encourage our Acadiana OB/GYN moms to breastfeed whenever possible. And we are happy to provide support & guidance for our new moms who want to make breastfeeding their first option.
