One of the biggest misconceptions about growing food is that if your property doesn’t have the right conditions, you’re out of luck.

I believe there’s almost always an opportunity to grow your own food.

This patio had limited growing space and sunlight, so instead of forcing a traditional garden into the landscape, we designed around those realities.

The raised beds are mounted on casters, allowing them to move with the sun throughout the season while maintaining a clean, intentional look on the patio.

Good design doesn’t ignore constraints. It works with them.

And often, that’s where the most interesting solutions come from.

When Matt and I built our first garden, I don’t think either of us could have imagined we’d someday be celebrating number 100.

Since then, we’ve worked on everything from small herb gardens tucked beside the kitchen door to larger edible landscapes filled with fruit trees, berries, vegetables, flowers, and places to gather.

What surprises me most is that every project still starts the same way: with a conversation about how someone wants to live.

Thank you to every client who trusted us with that conversation, and with the opportunity to build something together.

We’re incredibly grateful.

Designing a garden for a forever home is a little different.

The decisions tend to be less about what will look good this season and more about what will still be working beautifully ten years from now.

For this project, we built six raised beds from 4” thick rough-sawn cedar, added custom trellising throughout the space, and incorporated additional growing areas along the inside of the fence to maximize every square foot.

But my favorite part of the design is the “she shed.”

Yes, it’s charming, but what I love most is that this client knew she wanted to spend time in the garden, not just work in it. So she built that into the plan from the beginning.

Now she has a dedicated place to start seeds, store tools, watch the garden change through the seasons, and simply enjoy being outside.

When her family can’t find her, they already know where to look. 😉

The beauty of a kitchen garden is it can shift with the season of life.

An honor to see our work and philosophy featured in the Spring 2026 issue of SYNKD Magazine.

This article explores two very different kitchen garden projects and explores the intersection of edible landscaping, architecture, maintenance, functionality, and long-term garden living.

Thank you to for the feature and thoughtful conversation around what these spaces can become.

There’s a reason garden trellises never go out of style.

These double arch and obelisk trellises were designed specifically for this space and handcrafted locally by an artisan we work closely with here in the Lake Geneva area.

Beyond supporting climbing plants, structures like these completely change how a garden feels once everything starts filling in. They add height, definition, and create a stronger sense of place within the landscape.

Everything is made here in the USA, built with longevity in mind, and designed to fit the property rather than forcing a standard size into the space.

If you’ve been looking for custom garden trellising or arches for your own property, send me a DM and I’d be happy to share more details.

It is just oh-so-satisfying watching a space grow into itself.

A newly installed garden can feel very clean and structured at first, but give it a season and everything starts softening, climbing, filling in, and finding its rhythm.

This is what a kitchen garden can look like when it’s built right into your everyday routine.

This one sits just off the back deck. Close enough that you actually use it, simple enough that it never feels like work.

A note from the homeowner after living with it for a season:

“The Corten has already weathered beautifully and looks great. I use the garden constantly, and I cook more because of it. Now I can walk outside 10 feet, pick my lemon balm, and have tea in a few minutes.

I wish more things were as useful in our lives as this garden. I love it.”
