Week 5: lateral ankle sprain rehab

As symptoms improve, the goal is to progressively restore the components needed for a safe return to daily activities and higher-level movement.

My focus at this stage includes:

• Ankle mobility — restoring the range of motion needed for walking, squatting, stairs, and other functional activities
• Progressive strengthening — rebuilding strength in the ankle and surrounding muscles
• Balance and proprioception — retraining the body’s ability to sense joint position and react to changes in the environment
• Single-leg stability — improving control and confidence when the injured leg is responsible for supporting the body
• Functional progression — gradually challenging the ankle with movements that relate to individual goals and activities

One of the most important parts of rehabilitation is progression. An exercise that was challenging in the early stages may no longer provide enough stimulus as strength and control improve. The key is knowing when and how to safely progress mobility, resistance, balance, and functional activities.

Week 3: Lateral Ankle Rehab

Week 3 of rehabbing my own lateral ankle injury, and the focus is shifting from simply protecting the ankle to rebuilding strength, stability, proprioception, and confidence.

This week I’m working on:
• Single-leg control
• Calf + peroneal strength
• Balance and proprioception
• Controlled loading
• Gradually increasing functional movement

Progress isn’t always dramatic. Sometimes it looks like one more controlled rep, a little more range, or feeling just a bit more confident on that foot.

Week 3 — still rehabbing, still learning, still progressing. 💪🏼

WEEK 2: LATERAL ANKLE SPRAIN REHAB

Two weeks into rehabbing my own lateral ankle sprain, and this is where I’m starting to progress from simply protecting the ankle to rebuilding strength, control, and confidence.

This week’s focus:
✔️ Theraband resistance exercises
✔️ Controlled ankle strengthening
✔️ Reformer footwork
✔️ Gradually increasing load and movement
✔️ Working on stability without provoking symptoms

One of the biggest lessons I’m reminded of as a PT: just because the swelling and pain are improving doesn’t mean the ankle is ready for everything yet.

A good rehab program gradually challenges the ankle so it can handle the demands of walking, exercising, and eventually returning to higher-level activities.

I’m taking my own advice and progressing based on how my ankle responds—not simply because I’m at “Week 2.”

Follow along for Week 3 and see how my ankle continues to progress! 👣

Lateral Ankle Sprain? Let’s Rehab It—Together!

Yep… this one is my own injury! 😅🦶

I recently rolled my ankle, giving me the perfect opportunity to show you exactly what I would do as a physical therapist to rehab a lateral ankle sprain.

A lateral ankle sprain happens when the ankle rolls inward, stressing the ligaments on the outside of the ankle. Swelling, bruising, pain, and stiffness are common.

But rehab is about more than just waiting for it to feel better!

Follow along as I take you through my rehab journey:

1️⃣ Calm the pain & swelling
2️⃣ Restore ankle mobility
3️⃣ Rebuild strength 💪
4️⃣ Improve balance & stability
5️⃣ Progress back to normal activity 🏃‍♀️🥾

As a PT, I know what to do—but being the patient is a whole different experience! 😂

👉 Follow along to see how I progress my own ankle, step by step, and learn how you can do the same after an ankle sprain.

Let’s get this ankle strong, stable, and back to doing all the things!

Happy 150th Birthday, Colorado! 🎉🏔️

For 150 years, this beautiful state has inspired adventure, resilience, and wonder. I’m incredibly grateful to call Colorado my home, and for the opportunity to explore these mountains, breathe in the fresh air, and find peace in nature. Every hike, sunrise, and scenic drive is a reminder that movement is a gift and the outdoors has a way of restoring both body and mind.

Here’s to celebrating Colorado’s incredible legacy—and many more adventures ahead. 💛

Among the giants of Muir Woods, I’m reminded that resilience is built over time. The same is true for our bodies. Keep moving, keep growing. 🌲

Balance is more than strength—it’s how well your brain, eyes, inner ear (vestibular system), and muscles work together.

Try this simple test:
Stand on one leg and slowly turn your head side to side. If you feel unsteady, dizzy, or need to put your foot down, your balance system may need some attention.

Practicing vestibular balance exercises can improve stability, reduce your risk of falls, and help you move with greater confidence.

Need help with your balance? A physical therapist can assess your vestibular system and create a personalized plan to keep you steady on your feet.

These peonies are from my garden. They bloom yearly and remind me that taking care of your body is much the same. Every stretch, exercise, and small step forward is an investment in your future health. Keep planting the seeds. Your future self will thank you. 🙌🌸
