Michigan made a promise: people with intellectual and developmental disabilities belong in their communities, not institutions.

But community inclusion only works when there are enough direct care workers to provide the support people need. Today, Michigan's direct care workforce is in crisis, leaving families without reliable care and providers struggling to stay open.

Michigan has mandated that direct care workers be paid $17.13 per hour as of January 1, 2026, a $13.73 base minimum wage plus a $3.40 passthrough increase.
