Urolithin A is one of the more interesting healthy-aging compounds to come along in a while. It’s actually a substance your gut can make from compounds found in pomegranates, walnuts and certain berries, but people vary quite a bit in how much they naturally produce.

What makes it interesting is its connection to mitochondrial health. As we age, our cells aren’t quite as efficient at clearing out worn-out mitochondria. Urolithin A appears to encourage that cleanup process, called mitophagy, essentially helping cells recycle mitochondria that aren’t doing their job very well. Human studies have found changes in mitochondrial and cellular-health markers after supplementation.

Where the research gets especially interesting is muscle health. In randomized human trials, Urolithin A has been associated with improvements in measures of muscle endurance and strength, including research in both middle-aged and older adults. Not every measure improved, so I wouldn’t sell it as exercise in a capsule, but there’s enough human evidence here to make it much more than an interesting test-tube ingredient.

This particular product provides 500 mg per serving, which is especially noteworthy because 500 mg is one of the doses that has actually been used in human Urolithin A research.

For me, the appeal is pretty simple: supporting healthier mitochondria may help us maintain better muscle function and cellular energy as we get older. That’s a much more grounded reason to be excited about Urolithin A than promising that it somehow “reverses aging.” The science isn’t there for that claim, but the mitochondrial and muscle research is genuinely interesting.
