BENNY UPDATE
Benny had femoral head ostectomy (FHO) surgery Tuesday and has been released from the hospital. Now he begins a lengthy rehabilitation and recovery process. Once Benny has healed, he will be available for adoption. He is crate trained, loves other dogs, and is good with cats. Around a year and a half old, he weighs 42 pounds and is heartworm negative. If you are interested in Benny, please message the rescue.

Meet Leah. She’s been waiting for you. 🐾
Back in April, we got a call about a dog who had made herself right at home at Northeast Jones Elementary — showing up every morning to greet the kids, then quietly slipping away once they headed inside. Every single day. She even went over to a nearby church to play with the children on weekends.

Her name is Leah, and she clearly knew exactly what she was doing. 🐶

She was a instant favorite with children and teachers alike — and honestly, it’s not hard to see why. There’s something about a dog who chooses children that feels pretty special. And it turns out, that instinct has deep roots.

🐾 A little history: Dogs and children have been inseparable companions for thousands of years. Ancient Roman children kept dogs as playmates and protectors. In medieval Europe, large dogs were trusted to watch over babies. The word “companion” itself traces back to sharing bread — and dogs have been at our tables, and in our hearts, ever since. Some researchers believe children who grow up with dogs develop stronger empathy, better immune systems, and a deeper sense of responsibility. Leah, it seems, already knew all of this.

Leah has been fully vetted, spayed, and has just finished heartworm treatment — she is healthy and ready for her family.

She loves everyone, but little people are her people. She’s gentle, low-key, and would be perfectly happy spending her days being adored by kids and her evenings melting into the couch with her humans. She enjoys the occasional dog friend but honestly? She’d rather just be with you.

If you have children at home and room on your couch, Leah might be exactly who you’ve been looking for. 💙

In September of 2025, we received a message about a puppy in desperate need of help. He was weak and lethargic and suffering from gastrointestinal issues. We secured him and immediately got him to our vet. Our fear was confirmed when he was diagnosed with parvovirus. The prognosis was grim, but we told our vet to do his best to save him. Atticus was hospitalized, and treatment began, but this puppy had other symptoms that were not consistent with parvo. After the vet ran bloodwork, he discovered that Atticus had been poisoned. This puppy was fighting against two deadly issues. After he was stabilized, Atticus was released from the hospital and sent home to recover with a board member. He grew strong and, we thought, overcame his rough start in life. Then, another problem… Atticus tested positive for heartworms, so we regrouped and began his treatment. Now, after all this time, Atticus waits for a family. He is an amazing boy—funny, friendly, and affectionate. He is a hound mix. He is on the smaller side; since the early part of his life was so tough, his growth was probably stunted. When we first rescued him, he weighed just 20 pounds, and he was probably at least 7 or 8 months old. Atticus is crate trained and absolutely LOVES other dogs. He is fascinated (in a good way) with cats. And he does not hesitate to crawl up in a lap and act like a small lap dog…

As yall know Amanda hosted a benefit in March for the Laurel Jones county Animal rescue league, well it was a good success! Her clients really showed up for it! She is gonna keep it going for the month of June she will be hosting a fundraiser for The Least of these animal rescue. You can drop off food donations, cleaning supplies, blankets, monetary donations or get more information about the animals available for foster or adoption at Skin Deep Tuesday- Saturday 11-7! Let's help this great organization out!
