🧠 What happens in the brain when someone with PTSD is triggered?

For someone living with PTSD, a reminder of past trauma can cause the brain and body to respond as though the danger is happening right now.

During a trauma trigger:

🔥 The amygdala—the brain’s alarm system—may become highly activated.
🧠 The prefrontal cortex, responsible for reasoning and emotional regulation, may have a harder time calming that alarm.
🧩 The hippocampus, which helps place memories in context, may struggle to distinguish between “this happened then” and “this is happening now.”

This can lead to racing thoughts, increased heart rate, muscle tension, panic, freezing, shutting down, or an overwhelming urge to escape—even when the person is currently safe.

The encouraging part? The brain can learn new responses. Trauma-focused therapies such as EMDR and other evidence-based approaches can help the brain process traumatic memories, strengthen emotional regulation, and reduce the intensity of triggers over time.

💙 Healing doesn’t mean forgetting what happened. It means helping the brain recognize: “That was then. I am here now.”

🍎 Back-to-School Stress Tips 🎒

The transition from summer break back to school can be stressful for the entire family. New routines, earlier mornings, homework, activities, and changing expectations can take time to adjust to.

A few reminders as your family settles into the new school year:

✨ Be patient with your kids. Adjusting from the freedom of summer to a structured school day can be tiring and overwhelming.

⏰ Get back to a consistent household schedule. Regular bedtimes, wake-up times, meals, and homework routines can help everyone feel more settled.

😴 Prioritize rest. Kids—and parents—need downtime. Try not to fill every available moment with activities.

💛 Make room for connection and relaxation. Spend time together without focusing on homework, grades, or what needs to get done.

🌱 Give everyone time to adjust. A new routine doesn’t have to feel perfect during the first few days or even the first few weeks.

Back-to-school season is a transition for the whole household. A little structure, patience, rest, and grace can go a long way.

💬 Communication Styles: Which One Are You Using?

The way we communicate can either strengthen relationships or create conflict. Recognizing your communication style is the first step toward healthier conversations.

🟢 Passive: Avoids conflict and puts others’ needs first.

🔴 Aggressive: Focuses on winning, often at the expense of others.

🔵 Assertive: Expresses thoughts and feelings honestly while respecting others.

✨ Try using an “I Statement”:
I feel…
When…
Because…
I would appreciate…

Instead of saying:
❌ “You never listen.”

Try:
✅ “I feel unheard when I’m interrupted because I want to share my thoughts. I’d appreciate taking turns speaking.”

Healthy communication is built on respect, trust, understanding, and healthy boundaries.

Which communication style do you tend to use most?

💚 Healthy boundaries aren’t about pushing people away—they’re about protecting your peace.

Healthy boundaries help you communicate your needs, protect your time and energy, and build stronger, more respectful relationships.

If you constantly feel guilty for saying “no,” overextend yourself, or put everyone else’s needs before your own, it may be time to reevaluate your boundaries.

Remember: Saying “no” to what drains you allows you to say “yes” to what helps you thrive.

✨ Your well-being matters.

🧠 OCD: What It Is vs. What It Isn’t

Many people say, “I’m so OCD” when they like things neat or organized. But OCD is much more than a preference for cleanliness or order.

❌ OCD is NOT:
• Being organized
• Liking things a certain way
• Preferring a clean home
• Being detail-oriented

✅ OCD IS:
• Unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images, or urges (obsessions)
• Intense anxiety, fear, guilt, or distress
• Repetitive behaviors or mental rituals (compulsions) done to reduce that distress
• A cycle that can consume hours of a person’s day

Examples of OCD may include:
🔹 Repeatedly checking if a door is locked despite knowing it is
🔹 Fear of harming someone even though you never want to
🔹 Intrusive sexual, religious, or violent thoughts that feel disturbing and unwanted
🔹 Excessive reassurance-seeking or mental reviewing

The biggest myth? That people with OCD enjoy their thoughts or behaviors.

The truth: OCD attacks what matters most to a person and often causes significant suffering.

💙 OCD is a treatable mental health condition, and effective therapies like Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) can help people regain their lives.
