😎 SUN PROTECTION FRIDAY

Think sunscreen is only for beach days?

Think again.

Many people receive their highest amount of sun exposure doing everyday activities:

🚜 Mowing
🌻 Gardening
⚾ Watching ballgames
🎣 Fishing
🚶 Walking the dog

Even on cloudy days, UV rays can still reach your skin.

In fact, up to 80% of UV rays can pass through clouds.

That means sun protection isn’t just for vacation.

It’s for everyday life.

☀️ Apply sunscreen before heading outdoors.
☀️ Reapply every two hours.
☀️ Wear a hat whenever possible.

Your skin never forgets a sunburn.

💬 What’s your favorite outdoor summer activity?

☀️ SUMMER HEALTHCARE THURSDAY

Kentucky summers and bug bites seem to go hand in hand.

Mosquitoes aren’t just annoying.

Their bites can cause itching, swelling, skin irritation, and plenty of misery.

A few tips for avoiding becoming mosquito buffet:

🦟 Wear light-colored clothing
🦟 Use insect repellent when outdoors
🦟 Eliminate standing water around your home
🦟 Keep screens in good repair

And here’s something interesting:

It’s not actually the bite that makes you itch.

The itching comes from your body’s reaction to the mosquito’s saliva.

Who knew something so tiny could be so irritating?

💬 What’s your best trick for keeping mosquitoes away?

📅 THIS DAY IN MEDICAL HISTORY

Today we’re taking a moment to appreciate one of the simplest—and most important—medical discoveries ever made:

Handwashing.

In the mid-1800s, physician Ignaz Semmelweis noticed something remarkable.

Doctors who washed their hands before delivering babies had dramatically lower rates of infection.

At the time, many people dismissed the idea.

Today, handwashing is recognized as one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of illness.

It’s amazing how one simple observation helped save countless lives.

Sometimes the biggest breakthroughs aren’t complicated.

They’re simple habits that make a huge difference.

💬 What’s one healthy habit you’ve picked up over the years that you wish you’d started sooner?

🌿 OLD HEALTH REMEDIES THAT ACTUALLY WORKED

Ever wonder why your grandmother put honey in everything?

Turns out she may have been onto something.

For centuries, honey has been used to soothe sore throats and coughs.

Modern research has shown that honey can help reduce coughing, especially at night, and can soothe irritated tissues in the throat.

It’s one of those rare cases where old-fashioned wisdom and modern science agree.

Of course, Grandma probably didn’t need a scientific study to tell her that.

She just knew what worked.

💬 What was your family’s go-to remedy when you got sick as a child?

🩺 KENTUCKY MEDICAL HISTORY MONDAY

Imagine being told you have a tumor the size of a watermelon.

Now imagine it’s 1809.

No hospital.
No anesthesia.
No antibiotics.
No modern surgical equipment.

That was the reality facing Kentucky pioneer Jane Todd Crawford.

At the age of 46, Jane traveled approximately 60 miles on horseback from Green County to Danville to seek help from Dr. Ephraim McDowell. Most doctors believed her condition was hopeless.

What happened next changed medical history forever.

Dr. McDowell successfully removed a 22-pound ovarian tumor in what is widely considered the world’s first successful ovarian surgery.

The operation took place on a simple wooden table in Danville, Kentucky.

Jane survived.

Even more incredible? She lived another 32 years.

Today, people travel from around the world to learn about this groundbreaking moment in medicine—and it happened right here in Kentucky.

💬 Could you imagine making a 60-mile horseback journey for medical care?

✅ Wear lightweight clothing, sunscreen, and a hat when outdoors.

✅ Never leave children, older adults, or pets in a parked vehicle—even for a few minutes.

✅ Watch for signs of heat-related illness, including dizziness, headache, nausea, excessive sweating, or confusion.

At Called to Care, we want our community to enjoy a safe and healthy summer season. If you’re experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion or have concerns about your health, don’t wait to seek medical attention.

😎 SUN PROTECTION FRIDAY

Most people know sunscreen helps prevent sunburn.

But here’s something many don’t realize:

Sun damage is cumulative.

That means the sun exposure you get today adds to the exposure you’ve had your entire life.

One afternoon at the lake may not seem like much.

One afternoon working in the garden may not seem like much.

One baseball game.
One fishing trip.
One day on the tractor.

By themselves, they don’t seem significant.

But over years and decades, those hours add up.

That’s why protecting your skin isn’t just about avoiding a painful sunburn today.

It’s about protecting your future self.

☀️ Wear sunscreen.
🧢 Wear a hat.
🕶️ Protect your eyes.
💧 Stay hydrated.

Your future skin will thank you.

💬 What’s your favorite thing to do outside during the summer?
