I have seen an increase in athletes coming in that have hit a wall with their training.
Their heart rate spikes at points in their training that previously was easy peasy.
They find themselves all the sudden unable to to power down for sleep yet are exhausted.
This is an overlap that I believe needs more attention as treatment is not the same.
Yes REDs can cause OTS and Yes OTS can lead to REDs but they also need seperate attention to treatment.

Join me in the REDs Informed Provider ® certification program as we discuss how to assess and treat both REDs and OTS.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions about REDS...

👉 "If my weight hasn't changed, I must be eating enough."

REDs can happen at any weight, and being super thin with a low BMI is not the only identifying factor of REDs.

When the body is underfueled, it adapts by:

👉 Slowing metabolism
👉 Shifting hormones
👉 Making recovery harder
👉 Decreasing performance

This may even mean an athlete gains weight.

As providers, it's our duty to look beyond weight and BMI and assess athletes through a systems-level lens, which is exactly what I teach in the REDs Informed Provider Certification Program®.

It is that time of year.. summer is so fun but it can also be oh so busy.
You can find a race almost every day of the week ( yes even in the middle of the week)
That beautiful lawn is calling you to mow it, plant those shrubs you have been waiting to plant or float around that pool.
It is finally a time to take the family on vacation.
These are all good things however we only have one bucket of energy to pull from physically and mentally. Be sure to tune into your recovery capacity before you end up hitting a wall.

Ironically on Best Friends day shouldn't this be what we are looking for..
Can I surround myself wiht those who want to be real?
Do I gravitate towards someone whose intuition matches my own?
Is there someone who can agree to disagree?

🔥 Hot take: Athlete gut symptoms are rarely about a single food. They’re about systems.

Bloating.
Constipation.
Reflux.
Feeling full all the time.

These are some of the most common complaints I see from athletes.

The typical response to solve it is to:

Cut out dairy.
Try gluten-free.
Go low FODMAP.

But here’s the issue with that... we’re trying to solve a systems problem with a food list.

The same symptom can come from completely different drivers:
→ Motility
→ Absorption
→ Stress physiology
→ Fueling patterns
→ Food composition

In my latest blog post, I break down the Five Factors of Fueling—a REDs-informed framework to help you assess athlete gut symptoms without defaulting to restriction.

Because if we don’t understand the SYSTEM, we miss the root cause.

Athletic trainers are my go to as a consultant to help bridge the care with athletes. I have had ATCs catch athletes with early signs of disordered eating or abnormal patterns of injuries secondary to REDs.
Be sure to hug your ATC today!

Feeling full doesn’t mean you’re eating enough—and for many athletes, that’s exactly the problem.

I see this all the time in practice:

Athletes who are eating regularly…
Choosing “healthy” foods…
Trying to fuel well…

But still struggling with:
• Bloating
• Early satiety
• Low energy
• Poor recovery

In this blog, I break down how fiber, fluids, and protein can create this disconnect, and how it can actually contribute to REDs.

If you work with athletes (or are one), this is a key pattern to understand.

One thing I teach my clients is "First firsts" meaning how to navigate recovery for the first time.. vacation, illness, holidays, dating, etc.
Stability is so important as the brain is questioning "ok when is the next time we might be headed to a famine?" Causing it to adjust sooner than later.
If you can see what is ahead you can make plans and adjustments accordingly however if every time you look up there are turns your brain will shut down to protect you.

Join me in the REDs Informed Provider ® certification program as we lay out how to help our athletes plan their First Firsts.

Convincing an athlete or their coach/parent that there is a problem when they are performing great is one of the hardest pieces of REDs work.
However I try to take the approach that " You are performing great now lets keep it that way."
The stressor response is like a PED.. a short lived one that will eventually cause a body and brain to break.

Join me in the REDs Informed Provider ® certification program as we discuss why this initial state of REDs can cause one to feel great but end up in the danger zone.
