When it comes to improving flexibility, passive stretching may have a meaningful advantage over active stretching.

Passive stretching uses an outside force—such as a strap, wall, partner, or gravity—to help hold the position while the target muscle remains relaxed. Active stretching relies on your own muscular effort to create and maintain the stretch.

A 2023 systematic review of 41 studies found that passive stretching produced what researchers described as a “large effect” on range of motion—nearly a full standard deviation improvement in joint flexibility. Active stretching showed more moderate gains.

The difference may come down to how far you can comfortably move. External support may help you reach a deeper position than your muscles could manage on their own, without being limited as quickly by fatigue or discomfort in surrounding muscles.

Both approaches can support flexibility. Active stretching also engages the muscles as they lengthen and does not require assistance or equipment.

Microplastics may be doing something unexpected inside the body: stimulating the immune system.

When these tiny plastic particles enter the body, immune cells called macrophages recognize them as foreign and respond. They may increase production of inflammatory molecules, including interleukins and tumor necrosis factor—the same signaling chemicals involved in the body's response to infection.

In the short term, this is a normal immune reaction. The concern is what may happen when exposure continues over time.

Research suggests that ongoing exposure to microplastics may keep the immune system in a state of persistent activation. Some studies have found that macrophages exposed to microplastics can experience structural damage and even cell death. This could affect their ability to respond effectively to actual pathogens.

That creates an interesting paradox: the immune system may be continually stimulated by plastic particles while potentially becoming less effective at one of its primary jobs.

Most of this research comes from animal studies and laboratory models, so the long-term effects on human health are not fully established. Researchers are continuing to study this issue, and the findings so far suggest that it deserves continued attention.

The fabrics around your home may play a role in indoor air quality.

Synthetic materials such as polyester, nylon, and acrylic can release tiny plastic fibers during washing and normal wear. These microfibers are a type of microplastic, and some may become suspended in indoor air and be inhaled over time.

Once inhaled, microplastic particles may contribute to oxidative stress and inflammation in lung tissue. Because the immune system recognizes them as foreign material, they may also contribute to persistent, low-grade inflammation in the airways.

Natural fibers such as cotton, wool, and h**p do not create this same concern because they do not shed synthetic plastic particles.

Choosing natural fabrics will not eliminate microplastic exposure entirely. These particles are also found in tap water, food, and outdoor air. Still, clothing and household textiles are considered meaningful sources of indoor microfiber pollution, so the materials used in everyday clothing and home furnishings may influence how much you inhale.

A patient’s story: Why Vince finally gave chiropractic a chance.

"About a year ago I was dealing with a growing pain in my right leg. Being brought up old school I thought I could just work through the pain and in time it would go away, like it had in the past. My wife, knowing the pain I was in met Dr. Witter after mass at our Church. She explained the pain I was going through and in turn he explained certain techniques to her that might help me out.

My feelings about chiropractors had always been mixed. There is always someone with a story to tell and they're not usually good, these stories rarely come from firsthand knowledge. However, this time the pain grew worse and did not subside. Soon after I had reached my pain threshold and was convinced, I needed to do something about it. Work and spending time playing with my granddaughter has become excruciating. Being a military retiree, one option was to follow the road of so many others, which from my observation was pain killer, pain shots, operation after operation with continued pain management via drugs all the while never addressing the underlying cause. I also realized that my insurance, Tri-Care, did not support chiropractic care as a legitimate alternative.

Soon I found myself letting go of my misgivings and ended up in Dr. Witter's office. He set up a course of action for my condition that did not include drugs. Over several months my pain subsided and x-rays confirmed that under Dr. Witter's care the progression of spinal deterioration had halted. Currently I follow a basic maintenance routine designed specifically for me and to this day I have never revisited the debilitating pain that brought me here. Pregnancy is one of those times when getting the details right really matters—including vitamin D levels.

The standard recommendation during pregnancy sits at 600 IU per day, which is what you'll find in most over-the-counter prenatal supplements. The problem is that for women who start out deficient, this amount often doesn't move the needle enough to reach what's considered a sufficient blood level.

A randomized controlled trial tested three different doses in pregnant women - 400 IU, 2,000 IU, and 4,000 IU daily. The group taking 4,000 IU showed substantially higher vitamin D levels in both mothers and their newborns' cord blood by the time of delivery. Researchers also reported no adverse effects at that dose.

This and similar studies have led some maternal health experts to suggest that 2,000 to 4,000 IU daily may be more effective for pregnant women with low starting levels - particularly those with limited sun exposure.

Vitamin D's role in pregnancy goes way beyond what most people realize.

During pregnancy, the developing baby relies entirely on the mother's vitamin D supply. And it turns out this nutrient is doing a lot more than laying down calcium in the skeleton.

Research suggests that good maternal vitamin D status may play a role in fetal lung maturation — and could influence how well a child's lungs function later in life. On the immune side, babies born with higher vitamin D levels appear to have lower risks of childhood respiratory infections and asthma, which researchers believe reflects the mother's vitamin D status during pregnancy.
