Dr. Jose Albisu in the news — and sharing a message that could save your life.

Our own Dr. Jose Albisu recently spoke with KATV about a serious and growing health concern: the U.S. Hispanic population has the highest percentage of early-onset colorectal cancer of any ethnic group, and colorectal cancer diagnoses in people 50 and younger are on the rise.

The good news? Screening works. A colonoscopy is the gold-standard screening test, and it can do more than detect cancer — it allows doctors to find and remove precancerous polyps before they ever turn into cancer. As Dr. Albisu put it, catching them early can save a patient's life.

A few key takeaways from his interview:
-People at average risk should be screened starting at age 45 — earlier for those with a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps.
-Colorectal cancer often has no symptoms until it's advanced, which is why screening is so critical.
-Up to 15% of Hispanic patients are never even offered a screening test — a gap Dr. Albisu is working to close.
-Lifestyle matters too: he recommends avoiding processed foods and processed meats, limiting alcohol, and staying active.

At Pinnacle Gastroenterology, we're aiming to raise awareness and improve access to screening — for the general population and specifically the Hispanic community. KATV

Don't wait for symptoms. Talk to your primary care provider, or reach out to us directly.
