This is a great technique I often share with clients for releasing the deep hip rotators. If your glutes are feeling tight, or you notice your toes pointing outwards when you walk, give this a try.

Why a Two-Hour Massage Feels Different

A longer massage isn’t simply “more massage.” It gives your body time to move through the different stages of relaxation and therapeutic change.

Many people arrive carrying physical tension while their nervous system is still in a state of alertness. During the first part of a session, the body may need time to slow down, deepen the breath, and release protective muscle guarding. Once the nervous system begins shifting from “fight or flight” toward “rest and restore,” the tissues often become more receptive to therapeutic work.

A two-hour session allows more time to:

• Thoroughly address multiple areas of pain and tension
• Work with both the front and back of the body
• Explore connections between muscles, fascia, breathing, and movement
• Blend different modalities without rushing
• Gradually progress from calming techniques into more focused work
• Give areas of chronic tension the attention they need
• Finish the session gently so your body has time to integrate the work

Rather than trying to fit your body into a shortened routine, I can slow down, observe how your tissues respond, and adjust the pressure and techniques throughout the session.

This is especially beneficial when tension involves several connected areas—such as the neck, shoulders, chest, ribs, back, and hips—or when you want both focused therapeutic work and full-body relaxation.

GENERAL THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE OR MEDICAL MASSAGE?

General therapeutic massage focuses on the effects of everyday life—muscle tension, stress, fatigue, stiffness, and an overworked nervous system. Its purpose is to encourage relaxation, regulate the nervous system, and support overall physical well-being.

Medical massage is more targeted, outcome-based, and commonly covered by insurance when a referral is provided. It focuses on a specific chronic condition, injury, surgical recovery need, pain pattern, or movement restriction. The techniques and areas treated are chosen according to the concern being addressed and the results we are working toward.

Therapeutic massage supports how you feel.

Medical massage focuses on what needs to change.

Many clients benefit from a thoughtful combination of both—focused bodywork that addresses the problem while still helping the body feel safe enough to relax and recover.

Intuitive Massage: Blending Modalities for Better Results

The body doesn’t always respond according to a predetermined massage routine.

A modality-based session typically follows the principles and techniques of one specific method, such as Swedish massage, deep-tissue massage, myofascial release, or manual lymphatic drainage. Each modality offers valuable tools—but the body may need more than one type of support during a session.

As an intuitive massage therapist, I don’t limit the entire appointment to one technique. I draw from my training in multiple modalities and adjust the pressure, pace, and approach according to what I feel in the tissue, what I observe, how your body responds, and what you communicate.

An area that initially appears to need deeper pressure may actually respond better to gentle fascial work. Muscular tension may be influenced by restricted breathing, limited joint mobility, swelling, or tension somewhere else in the body. As the tissues begin to change, the technique may need to change with them.

Intuitive massage isn’t guesswork, and it isn’t intuition without education. It is the ability to combine training, experience, palpation, observation, and client feedback in real time.

Modalities provide the tools. Intuition helps me determine which tool your body needs—and when it’s time to choose another one.

Rather than making your body fit into one specific modality, I blend modalities to create a personalized session designed to achieve the best possible results for you that day.

Planning a September Surgical Procedure?

My September schedule for post-operative lymphatic drainage is now completely full. New post-op patients may begin scheduling recovery treatments starting October 1.

Even if your procedure takes place in September, it’s not too early to plan your October recovery care. Appointment availability is limited, and booking a series in advance helps ensure you have consistent support during the later stages of healing.

Send me a private message and schedule a telehealth consultation to discuss your procedure and reserve your October recovery treatments.

Why Specialized Training Matters

Massage therapy is not one-size-fits-all—especially when working with pain, swelling, surgical recovery, or medically complex concerns.

My certifications in Medical Massage, Vodder Manual Lymphatic Drainage, and Post-Operative Lymphatic Drainage allow me to look beyond a standard massage routine and choose techniques based on each client’s needs, stage of healing, and treatment goals.

Medical Massage training helps me understand common musculoskeletal conditions, recognize patterns of dysfunction, and create focused sessions designed to address specific areas of pain, tension, and limited mobility.

Vodder Manual Lymphatic Drainage training provides a structured understanding of lymphatic anatomy and the gentle, rhythmic techniques used to support fluid movement. Because the superficial lymphatic vessels are delicate, effective lymphatic work often requires precision—not increased pressure.

Post-Operative Lymphatic Drainage training helps me adapt treatment for the different stages of recovery following procedures such as liposuction, tummy tucks, and body-contouring surgery. Early healing may require extremely gentle techniques, while later stages may benefit from carefully introduced fascial and tissue work.

These certifications don’t mean that every client receives the same protocol—or that I use only one modality throughout a session. They give me a broader collection of specialized tools and the knowledge to understand when each one may or may not be appropriate.

I combine this training with observation, palpation, client feedback, and an intuitive awareness of how the body is responding. This allows each session to evolve based on what your body needs that day.

Specialized training provides the foundation. Experience and intuition help me apply it thoughtfully.

Massage therapy does not replace medical diagnosis or treatment. When symptoms fall outside my scope of practice, I encourage clients to consult the appropriate healthcare provider.

💧 Vodder Manual Lymphatic Drainage vs. Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage: What’s the Difference?

Although both treatments are intended to encourage fluid movement and reduce feelings of puffiness or congestion, they are not the same technique.

Vodder Manual Lymphatic Drainage is:

• Slow, gentle and rhythmic
• Based on lymphatic anatomy and drainage pathways
• Performed with precise stretching and releasing of the skin
• Designed to influence the superficial lymphatic system without overwhelming delicate tissues
• Commonly used for edema, lymphedema and medically complicated or postoperative swelling

Vodder MLD also tends to have a deeply calming effect on the nervous system, making it ideal for clients with painful, sensitive or fragile tissues.

Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage is generally:

• Faster and more vigorous
• Focused on temporary body contouring and waist definition
• Performed with firmer sweeping, pumping and compressive movements
• Commonly used for bloating, puffiness and aesthetic results

Clients may notice an immediate change in their shape because excess fluid has been temporarily redistributed—but this is not fat loss or permanent body sculpting. Brazilian lymphatic drainage is also not one standardized clinical method, so techniques can vary significantly among practitioners.

Neither method is automatically “better.” The right choice depends on the client’s condition, stage of healing and treatment goals.

As an ACOLS-trained Vodder MLD therapist, I prioritize gentle, anatomically informed drainage during the early stages of postoperative healing, when tissues are tender, inflamed and vulnerable. As healing progresses, firmer Brazilian-style drainage, fascial work and contouring techniques may be introduced when appropriate.

I incorporate elements of both Vodder Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage throughout the different stages of healing and recovery following cosmetic procedures such as tummy tucks and liposuction. Each session is adapted to the condition of the tissues and the client’s individual recovery needs.

Comprehensive lymphatic care isn’t always about using gentle pressure. It’s about choosing the right pressure, pathway and technique for the body—and the stage of healing.
