Even if a patient is breathing, adequate oxygen intake cannot be assumed.
Constant monitoring is critical, and the 🔷pulse-ox🔷 is a vital tool.

▶ It allows noninvasive monitoring of blood oxygen saturation (SpO₂), and provides an early-warning system for hypoxemia; typically below 92% saturation
▶ Burns can reduce saturation by reducing the chests ability to expand and contract, by compromising an airway (injury or swelling, pneumothorax, hemothorax, etc.), but also through a number of other mechanisms
▶ Caution: standard pulse oximeters are highly unreliable for detecting true oxygenation in patients suffering from CO poisoning. Because CO strongly binds to hemoglobin, standard devices falsely overestimate oxygen levels.

🤕 NOT ALL INJURIES ARE VISIBLE 🫁

When a patient has facial burns, we assume they have internal burns as well. Gasping when surprised is a human instinct, which results in lung damage when fire is inhaled.

Throat edema, or fluid accumulation and swelling in the tissues of the upper or lower airways, is also a risk. Visual and auditory clues are used to assess impairment, e.g., singed nasal hairs, carbonaceous sputum (the coughing up of mucus or phlegm that contains black soot), hoarseness, stridor or wheezing.

Our funds are extremely tight as we struggle to provide necessary supplies and transportation to our volunteers.

We are the only mobile clinics providing aid in many communities stripped of medical resources. A war they did not want has moved too close to their homes, and now these doctors are the only ones available. They are the lifeline these patients depend on.
