Most approaches to autoimmunity treat the immune system like an enemy, and they simply suppress it.

But the immune system is responding to a set of conditions that have made it impossible for it to regulate itself properly...

Circadian disruption
→ When your light and dark cycles are broken, your immune cells lose their timing and stop knowing when to activate and when to stand down.

Toxic Load
→ When heavy metals and chemicals accumulate in the body, your immune system starts attacking proteins it no longer recognises as its own.

Chronic infection
→ When pathogens stay in the body for years, the immune system stays in a permanent state of activation trying to reach something it cannot fully clear.

Unresolved trauma
→ When traumatic experiences are stored in the nervous system, the body stays in a chronic state of threat and everything becomes a danger signal.

✅ when the circadian rhythm is restored,
✅ when the toxic load is reduced,
✅ when chronic infections are cleared,
✅ when the nervous system finally feels safe,
the immune system no longer has anything to react to, and it regulates itself.

If you are dealing with an autoimmune condition, please remember that...You were never at war with your body and your body was never at war with you.

Dr. McLaughlin covers this in depth in his new book, The Autoimmune Revival, available on Amazon.

This is exactly why we talk about the four drivers of autoimmunity (circadian misalignment, chronic toxicity, chronic infection, and trauma) and why addressing all of them, in the right order, is what actually heals the body.

You can't jump straight into treating infections without first making sure the foundation is there to support it.

👉 Heavy metals worsen infections;
👉 Circadian disruption blocks the body's ability to detox and repair;
👉 Trauma keeps the nervous system in a state that makes it nearly impossible for the immune system to regulate itself.

‼️ And none of these drivers operate in isolation, they feed each other, which is why treating just one, even perfectly, rarely gets people all the way there.

In "The Autoimmune Revival" book, Dr. McLaughlin breaks down all four pillars, how they interact, and what needs to happen first in order to overcome autoimmunity.

Let us explain why this is the most important question that should be asked if you are living with an autoimmune condition.

The immune system is always responding to something, and in autoimmunity that something has usually been present in the body for years, driving immune dysfunction until the body can no longer keep up.

And that something could be:
👉 a toxic load of heavy metals and chemicals
👉 a chronic infection
👉 a circadian rhythm that has been disrupted
👉 unresolved trauma stored in your nervous system

We are not looking for something wrong with you, but for what your immune system has been reacting to, possibly for decades, that nobody has ever identified or removed. Because when those drivers are found and addressed, the body can actually start to heal.

Everything we covered here and much more is in Dr. McLaughlin's new book “The Autoimmune Revival”, available on Amazon and free on Kindle Unlimited.

If you have an autoimmune condition, chances are your journey started in a doctor's office where you said something is wrong, and you were told your labs are fine, maybe it's anxiety or stress.

Or worse, like in Megan's case, she was told it might be cancer (If you're new here, her full story is linked in bio)

And so you learned to stop trusting yourself, to second guess every symptom, to wonder if you were making it up. And what most people don't know is that being dismissed, gaslit, and sent home without answers is itself a form of trauma, and that trauma has a direct biological cost.

When you stop trusting your own perception, your immune system does the exact same thing, it loses its ability to tell self from non-self, and that confusion is at the very heart of autoimmunity.

The average autoimmune patient sees 5 or more doctors over 4 to 6 years before getting a diagnosis. And even then, nobody asks about sleep, toxic load, childhood trauma, or infection history…

Symptoms get treated one by one while the actual drivers of immune dysfunction are never part of the conversation.

Autoimmunity is a predictable response to identifiable drivers: circadian disruption, toxins, infections, and trauma. And when those drivers are addressed, the body knows how to heal.

If you have spent years being told nothing is wrong with you, this is your reminder that you were never crazy.

And so...trauma can become physical illness.

Because the body is spending all of its resources on that chronic stress response, and it cannot do the other things it is supposed to do every day...
👉 toxins accumulate instead of being cleared;
👉 infections that should have resolved become chronic;
👉 and when circadian rhythms are disrupted on top of that, the body loses the one daily window it has to repair, regulate, and recover.

This is the environment autoimmunity lives in.

And this is why treating only the immune system, or only the infections, or only the toxins, never fully works.

If you want to understand the full picture, Dr. McLaughlin breaks all of this down in depth in his new book The Autoimmune Revival, available on Amazon.

Many people are born already carrying a toxic load. Heavy metals and other toxins transfer directly from mother to child, which is part of why autoimmunity is so much more common today than it was even a generation ago...

What makes this clinically important is what happens when infections enter that environment later in life. A body with a high metal burden does not respond to infections the way a clean body would.

The immune system is already compromised, and many pathogens have evolved to use heavy metals as fuel...They bind to them, hide within them, and become extremely difficult to clear precisely because the metals are there.

And underneath both of those is usually an unresolved trauma response that has been keeping the nervous system in a chronic stress state for years, which means the immune system has never had the regulatory capacity to deal with any of it properly.

And if sleep is dysregulated on top of that, the body is also missing the one daily biological window where detoxification, immune regulation, and tissue repair are supposed to happen.

This is why the approach has to address all four at the same time.

In clinical practice, that means identifying the specific infections present, the specific metals and toxins being carried, the nervous system patterns driving chronic stress, and the circadian disruptions breaking down the body's ability to recover, and building a treatment plan around what that specific person is actually dealing with.

‼️ Pulling one thread without stabilizing the others is why so many people cycle through treatments and never fully recover.

In our latest podcast episode, we broke down the circadian biology and walked through the protocol we use in practice:

1️⃣ morning sunlight,
2️⃣ blocking artificial light at night,
3️⃣ no food before bed,
4️⃣ and a completely dark sleeping environment.

What may look so simple is actually one of the most foundational and frequently overlooked interventions in chronic illness and autoimmunity, ‼️ because without a functioning circadian rhythm, the immune system, hormonal system, and overnight repair cycle cannot operate correctly.

Morning Sunlight
→ triggers the cortisol peak that regulates immune activity for the day. Without it, the immune system loses one of its primary daily reset signals.

Blocking Artificial Light at Night
→ artificial light after dark suppresses melatonin, which is not only a sleep hormone, but a direct regulator of immune function and overnight tissue repair.

No Food Before Bed
→ late eating keeps the gut active when it should be repairing. The intestinal lining restores overnight, and that process gets interrupted when digestion is still running.

A Completely Dark Sleeping Environment
→ light exposure during sleep fragments the sleep stages where immune regulation, inflammatory clearance, and cellular repair actually happen.

And so, If the circadian rhythm is not restored first, the body never fully enters the state where healing is even possible.

A diet free of gluten, sugar, processed foods, and inflammatory triggers, while foundational, can not replace the clinical work we do around the four core drivers of chronic inflammation and autoimmunity.

What we see repeatedly in practice is patients eating well, supplementing correctly, and still not resolving, because the root causes are still active underneath.

Circadian Disruption
→ breaks the body's internal clock that tells the immune system when to activate, when to calm down, and when to repair. And no food can correct that.

Toxicity
→ (from heavy metals, mold, or chemicals) damages the body's own tissues to the point where the immune system starts attacking them.

Chronic Infections
→ keep the immune system chronically activated, draining its ability to self-regulate.

Unresolved Trauma
→ keeps the stress system stuck in a state that drives inflammation at a level diet simply can not reach.

Dr. McLaughlin covers this in depth in his new book, The Autoimmune Revival, available on Amazon.

When the autonomic nervous system is locked in that chronic threat state, it begins to redistribute the body's resources away from everything that is not immediately necessary for survival.

And that includes
👉 the immune system's ability to properly respond to pathogens,
👉 the liver and lymphatic system's ability to filter and eliminate toxins,
👉 the gut's ability to maintain its lining and regulate what passes into the bloodstream,
👉 the brain's ability to regulate mood and make clear decisions,
👉 and the endocrine system's ability to produce and balance the hormones...

Psychologically, trauma causes a person to dissociate from their physical experience as a way of protecting themselves from the full weight of what they are going through, which means the brain starts to process the body as something separate from the self rather than as an integrated part of it.

When that disconnection is sustained over months and years, the body loses access to that connection between mind and body that healing actually requires.

And this is precisely the environment in which chronic illness takes root, and ‼️ no treatment can fully work in a body that is still operating from a place of trauma, disconnection, and survival.

Dr. McLaughlin breaks all of this down in depth in his new book: The Autoimmune Revival, available on Amazon.

When you experience trauma, your body stores it in your nervous system, your tissues, and your cells, and it keeps your body locked in a constant state of stress where the only priority becomes survival.

This means that all the normal functions your body is supposed to perform every single day (releasing toxins, creating a proper immune response to infections) simply do not happen the way they should.

This is why unresolved trauma is one of the four root causes we address in our approach to healing, alongside toxins, infections, and circadian disruption. They are so deeply interconnected that you cannot fully resolve one without addressing the others.

The trauma keeps the body in a chronic stress state, and in that state,
👉 toxins accumulate in the tissues and organs instead of being cleared,
👉 infections that the immune system would normally identify and eliminate become chronic and start driving inflammation.

And so, when circadian rhythms are disrupted (we are not sleeping well, not waking up with natural light, not living in sync with our body's natural cycles)
👉 cortisol and melatonin patterns break down,
👉 the immune system loses its ability to regulate itself properly,
👉 the brain cannot clear the metabolic waste it is designed to clear during deep sleep,
👉 and the body's ability to process both trauma and toxins becomes even more compromised.

These four root causes create a cycle that conventional medicine rarely looks at as a whole, which is why so many people stay sick despite doing everything they are told.
