I am covering vinyasa flow 2/3 classes on Tues/Thurs Center For Yoga LA for the next few months. I always look forward to the opportunity to teach more advanced classes because I think it’s fun to build towards advanced poses and spend less time breaking things down and explaining. However, last week when one of these classes was smaller than usual, a student asked me to teach jumping to Chatturanga because that’s not something that normally gets taught in a level 2/3 class. I was happy to teach it - and I have a lot of suggestions, as I DO teach this often in my Vinyasa Flow 1 class - but it reminded me that sometimes the thing I might think isn’t needed in an advanced class is the very thing some students never got. And, while smaller class sizes might be frustrating for teachers, they are a gift for students. What’s something you practice regularly, but never really got taught? I’d love to hear - let me know in the comments!

Spring Fever? Characterized as a sudden burst of energy or motivation to socialize as the days get longer…it may also be causing restlessness, anxiety, mood swings, fatigue, and poor sleep as we adjust to the changing season. Our yoga practice invites us to boost energy naturally, calm our nervous system, and get grounded.

I often remind the yogis in my classes that transitions matter - the transitions between poses in your practice should receive the same focus, attention, and breath as you have once you “land in a pose.” Rushed transitions often lead to instability or misalignment that could have been avoided.

This spring - stay focused, keep steady, and remember to breathe! Teaching all my regular classes - and subbing Infrared Yin on Sunday!

Have you ever been told to lift your forearm bones in Downward Dog and been confused? To straighten your arms when you are certain they are already straight? You are not the problem - your teacher may not be aware of what is called a carrying angle. When we stand with our arms at our sides, palms facing forward, and there is a distinct angle formed between our upper arms and our forearms, this is called a carrying angle. The carrying angle is a naturally occurring structural alignment that has aided human evolution because it allows the arms to clear the hips while carrying objects. As a respected teacher of mine once told me - it makes those of us with this condition “good peasant stock.”

So ... instead of suddenly becoming insecure about your elbows (as I did when I first heard this - “Seriously? it’s not my butt or my thighs, but my ELBOWS?”), why not consider the advantages you have? Nature intended this as a gift. Yoga practice does not typically change the structural, skeletal carrying angle of the elbow, but it significantly affects how a practitioner works with it. Weight bearing postures like Downward Dog or Chatturanga can require adjusting the hand placement to stabilize joints.

Recognizing unique skeletal variations helps practitioners customise their practice to maximize their own alignment needs and alleviate joint pressure and pain - and make the practice THIER OWN! This is why yoga is for EVERY BODY!
