Sometimes, the way we communicate during conflict matters more than the words we choose. If you want to have more productive conversations with your partner, one simple shift can help both of you feel more heard and less defensive. Keep reading to learn more!

Instead of saying:
“You never listen.”
Try this:
“Before I respond, can I make sure I understand what you’re saying?”
Then repeat back what you think your partner is trying to say.
“Did I understand you correctly?”

Why does this help?
Most people don't calm down because they finally “won” the argument.
They calm down because they finally feel understood.

When someone feels heard, their defenses often soften.
The conversation can become less about:
“How do I prove my point?”
and more about:
“How do we solve this together?”

You can't control whether your partner responds the same way.
But you can influence the emotional climate enough to find out what happens when one person approaches the conflict differently.

And if this feels impossible in your relationship, it may not be a communication-skills problem.
Sometimes couples need help breaking patterns that have been repeating for years.

What feels harder for you during conflict?
Feeling heard or helping your partner feel heard?

"Boundaries aren't just something you do when you can't take it anymore.
Boundaries are something you do to ensure
you never get to that point." - Kris Reece

Jasmine here! This quote is currently significant because many tend to set boundaries as an emergency exit after we’ve been hurt by someone. When we set healthy boundaries in the beginning, it doesn’t mean we’re preventing the potential hurt, but we’re letting those around us know that we care about the relationship enough to protect what is left of it.

I'm loving this quote recently, because, despite being really old, this notion is true today!

Guarding our thoughts is so important, especially when our circumstances are less than ideal, when anxiety is taking over, or if you find yourself operating off untruths.

While happiness can be kind of tickle the quality of our thoughts is still important to guard and shape. ❤️

Our nervous system is like a security system in a home. Its job is to protect us and alert us when something feels unsafe. Sometimes, after painful experiences, that system can become extra sensitive. Not because it is broken, but because it learned to protect us.

Healing happens when we begin creating new experiences of safety, trust, and connection. In therapy, we work toward helping the brain and body learn, “I can be safe here. I can slow down. I can heal.”

Depression can often look like laziness in real life.

What appears to be a lack of motivation is often emotional exhaustion, hopelessness, or difficulty finding pleasure in daily activities. Individuals living with depression may struggle to complete basic tasks, withdraw from others, or seem unproductive, even though they are expending tremendous energy just trying to get through the day. What others perceive as "not trying hard enough" is often someone fighting an invisible battle.

If you're struggling with depression, you deserve a therapist who will look beyond the symptoms and seek to understand your unique experiences. My goal is to provide a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental space where you can openly explore your thoughts, emotions, and challenges. Together, we'll identify the factors contributing to your depression, strengthen healthy coping strategies, and work toward restoring hope, confidence, and a greater sense of purpose.

Drawing from evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), I tailor treatment to your individual needs and goals. I believe healing happens through a collaborative therapeutic relationship built on empathy, respect, and practical tools that empower you to make meaningful, lasting changes at your own pace.

I am currently seeing that a lot of clients, of all ages, are noticing that they are struggling with fear of judgment in regard to “External and Internal Validation”.

I am addressing this in my work, by giving my clients Psychoeducation on the “Spotlight Effect”. The Spotlight Effect focuses on how we all tend to overestimate how much others notice our mistakes or appearance.

It’s important to realize that people are usually way too focused on themselves and their own lives to over-analyze yours. I believe it is important to educate my clients on this, and draw it out, so that they have a visual of how each thought can plant a seed that isn’t beneficial to their thought process.

If you resonate with this, let's talk! You can reach me at:

Burnout vs. Depression — Spotting the Difference

When you are running on empty, it can be hard to pinpoint exactly what is wrong. Am I just incredibly burned out by my job, or is this clinical depression?

While they share overlapping symptoms—like extreme fatigue and low motivation—they are fundamentally different experiences that require different types of support.

Burnout vs. Clinical Depression:

Burnout is Context-Specific: It is primarily an occupational phenomenon caused by chronic, unmanaged workplace stress. If you completely remove yourself from that environment (like taking a 2-week vacation), the heavy fog and cynicism usually begin to lift.

Depression is Pervasive: Clinical depression affects every area of your life, regardless of environment. It persists even when work is going well or when you are on vacation. It often includes feelings of deep worthlessness, pervasive sadness, and an inability to experience pleasure in any hobby or relationship (anhedonia).

Preventive Self-Care Strategies for Chronic Stress:
If you feel yourself sliding toward burnout, standard "bubble bath" self-care probably won't cut it. You likely need more structural self-care:

Radical Boundaries: Say "no" to non-essential tasks. As much as possible, protect your off-hours by turning off work notifications completely.

The 10-Minute Decompression Buffer: Consider building a hard boundary between your workday and your personal life. Walk around the block, listen to a favorite song, or change your clothes to signal to your brain that it is safe to shift gears (this one can be SO powerful especially when we are making a conscious effort to notice how we feel when we do this!).

Micro-Rest: Rest isn't just sleeping👏 It’s also sensory rest, things such as turning off bright lights/screens, social rest like spending time with people who require zero energy, and mental rest like doing a mindless, repetitive hobby.

The Takeaway: Whether it's burnout or depression, you don't have to wait until you hit rock bottom to ask for help. 🩷
