In 2004, OBAT started serving an unfortunate and forgotten group of people, commonly known as Bihari or Urdu Speaking (formerly known as stranded Pakistanis).

OBAT Helpers is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit empowering marginalized and displaced communities in Bangladesh through education, healthcare, WASH, livelihoods, youth development, and emergency relief. amps in Bangladesh. Over 300,000 of them are living in 116 makeshift camps in 13 different cities throughout Bangladesh since 1971. More than three generations of this community continue to live in 8 ft. x 10 ft. spaces in abject poverty, with no access to basic amenities. They face a severe lack of education, healthcare and income earning opportunities. OBAT Helpers has been instrumental in providing opportunities for growth and transformation to this community through the areas of education, health, infrastructure development, empowerment and relief. Since September 2017, OBAT has also been in the forefront of serving Rohingya refugees after the crises erupted in August 2017. The Rohingya escaped from persecution and genocide in Myanmar to seek protection in Bangladesh. With the crisis unfolding at the doorstep of OBAT’s projects, the organization made a strategic decision to provide humanitarian assistance in the immediate aftermath and apply solutions and lessons learned from the Urdu-speaking camps to help the recently displaced individuals. OBAT’s current relief strategy in the Rohingya camps addresses the medical, educational, nutritional and emergency needs of the refugees. Not a target. Not a five-year goal.

Right now, today, 11,700 students are enrolled in OBAT schools.

That's 11,700 children in a community where, just a generation ago, almost none ever saw the inside of a classroom — a community of stranded, displaced families the world had all but forgotten.

Education isn't one of the things we do. It's the thing we do — because it's the only real exit from the cycle that has held this community in place for decades. A classroom today becomes a career tomorrow, and a different future for an entire family.

Some people are handed their future. Mahbuba is writing hers — one line of code at a time. 💻

In February 2024, Mahbuba Razia Binte Zia lost her father. As the eldest daughter in a family of five in a colony in Rangpur, that loss could have written the rest of her story for her — a stretched household, and a girl who quietly leaves school. It's how so many stories like hers end.

Mahbuba refused that ending.

Her journey with OBAT began at the very start — class one, at OBAT School, Rangpur — and continued through an OBAT scholarship that kept her in education when it would have been so easy to fall away. Then she joined the OBAT IT Center, Rangpur, in our 36th training batch, and something clicked. A girl who had grown up with so little sat down at a keyboard and realised she could build anything.

Today, Mahbuba is in her 5th semester of Computer Science & Technology at Rangpur Polytechnic Institute. In her 4th semester, she achieved a CGPA of 4.00 — out of a possible 4.00. A perfect score, carried on the shoulders of everything she's been through.

She now writes in C++, Python, and Java. She dreams of becoming a software engineer, and after her diploma she's aiming for admission to DUET, one of Bangladesh's top engineering universities.

A girl the world might have overlooked is now fluent in the language that's building the future. Every function she writes, every problem she solves, every perfect result — it's her, rewriting a destiny others had already assumed for her.

The exams have begun — and it's one of the most hopeful sights we know.

On the 18th of August, our second-term examinations opened at the same hour across all of our schools in Bangladesh, from the primary classrooms in Gilatala to campuses in cities across the country. And almost every single student showed up, full of enthusiasm.

For most children, an exam is just an exam. For a child growing up in one of the 66 camps that nearly 300,000 stranded Pakistanis still call home, it is something much bigger. It is proof that their future has not been decided for them.

These are children who share a single room with their entire family. Who study by whatever light they can find. Who walk into that exam hall anyway — prepared, hopeful, and quietly determined. And standing beside them are teachers and head teachers who readied every classroom with a care and sincerity that humbles us.

This year, the students of OBAT Junior High School, Khalishpur, Khulna did more than learn about climate change — they took action against it.

As part of the "One Child, One Tree" Campaign 2026, students from Grades 3 to 8 each planted a tree at their own home, taking a small but powerful step toward disaster risk reduction and a greener future.

Our founder, Anwar Khan , was born on World Humanitarian Day — and spent the next two decades proving it was no coincidence. In 2004 he visited a refugee camp in Bangladesh and couldn't look away. While working a full-time career, he built OBAT Helpers into a movement that has educated 27,000+ students, treated 329,000+ patients, and brought hope to hundreds of thousands of forgotten people.
