Clinical Confidence Wednesday
New nurse or nursing student, building clinical confidence starts with learning how to recognize when a patientโs condition may be changing.
One helpful tool many healthcare teams use is the ๐ ๐๐ช๐ฆ helps nurses identify early signs of patient deterioration by looking at key clinical indicators such as:
โข Respiratory rate
โข Heart rate
โข Blood pressure
โข Temperature
โข Level of consciousness
โข Urine output,
depending on facility policy.
Why is MEWS important?
Because small changes can be early warning signs. When you know what to watch for, you can communicate concerns sooner, escalate care appropriately, and help keep your patients safer. It supports timely decision-making, stronger nurse-provider communication, and better patient outcomes.
Remember: using a tool like MEWS is not about replacing your nursing judgment, it helps strengthen it. Your assessment skills, critical thinking, and willingness to speak up matter.
