Please join us at Tyte Gallery for the public opening reception of Julia Whitney Barnes: Cyanopaintings and the Botanical World on Saturday, October 3, from 5:00-7:00 PM.

This upcoming exhibition presents lush, intricately layered botanical paintings inspired by the 19th-century cyanotype photographic process. Beginning with unique cyanotype prints on watercolor paper, Hudson Valley-based artist Julia Whitney Barnes builds her compositions with layers of watercolor, gouache, acrylic, and ink, often incorporating plant species gathered from her own garden. The resulting works honor the floral tradition while offering a distinctly contemporary interpretation.

Curated by Wayne Lempka, an art historian, curator, and museum professional whose career includes more than 200 exhibitions, the exhibition will remain on view through Sunday, November 22, 2026.

Tyte Medispa + Gallery is pleased to announce Julia Whitney Barnes: Cyanopaintings and the Botanical World, curated by Wayne Lempka, opening Saturday, October 3, 2026.

Inspired by the 19th-century cyanotype photographic process, Whitney Barnes begins with unique cyanotype prints on watercolor paper, building richly layered botanical compositions with watercolor, gouache, acrylic, and ink. Many incorporate plant species gathered from her Hudson Valley garden, resulting in lush contemporary works that both honor and expand the floral tradition.
