The Hive provides community-based day programming for adults with disabilities in the southwest Chicago suburbs, with a focus on life skills, social connection, vocational experiences, independence, self-advocacy, and meaningful participation.

Our participants worked together to put a bike together for our National Night Out donation to the Mokena Police Department! 💙👮‍♂️

We love giving our participants opportunities to work together, practice hands-on skills, and give back to the community we’re proud to be a part of.

For years, there's a routine.

School. Teachers. Therapists. Friends. Activities. Goals. A team.

And then transition services eventually end.

But the need for purpose, friendships, experiences, learning, independence, and belonging doesn't suddenly disappear.

Adulthood is not the end of development.

It's the beginning of an entirely new chapter.

That's one of the reasons The Hive exists. 🐝

We want adults with disabilities to have opportunities to continue exploring who they are, what they enjoy, what they're capable of, and how they want to participate in their community.

If your family is starting to think about life after school, you don't have to wait until the last minute to explore options.

When people hear "vocational skills," they often immediately think: JOB.

But vocational development can start long before someone fills out an application. 💼

It can mean learning to follow a routine, complete a task, communicate with others, work as part of a team, problem-solve, manage frustration, adapt when something changes, discover personal strengths, and build confidence.

For some adults, those skills may eventually lead to employment.

For others, they may lead to meaningful volunteer opportunities, increased responsibility, or greater participation in their community.

There isn't only one definition of success.

At The Hive, we're interested in helping each person discover what meaningful contribution can look like for them. 🐝

Sometimes we think independence means doing everything completely on your own.

We see it differently.

Independence can mean making your own choice.

Communicating what you want.

Knowing when you need help... and asking for it.

Trying something before someone automatically steps in.

Learning how to solve a problem.

Advocating for yourself.

Having a voice in your own life.

Support and independence can exist together. 💛

Our goal at The Hive is to help each participant build independence in ways that are meaningful to them.
