Irlen Syndrome is sometimes confused with dyslexia because both can affect reading, learning, and visual comfort. However, they involve different underlying processes. Dyslexia primarily affects language-based processing skills, while Irlen Syndrome is a visual processing difficulty where the brain has trouble processing certain wavelengths of light, which can make reading feel exhausting, words appear distorted, or concentration become difficult.

Because the symptoms can overlap — such as slow reading, skipping words, losing place, headaches, or avoiding reading — Irlen Syndrome may be mistaken for dyslexia or may exist alongside it. Identifying the difference can help ensure the right support is provided.

Irlen Syndrome- it’s a family affair.

Research indicates a strong familial link, meaning if a parent has Irlen Syndrome, there is a significantly higher probability their children will experience similar visual processing sensitivities.

It is classified as a genetic, neuro-perceptual dysfunction where the brain’s visual cortex becomes overstimulated by certain light frequencies. Because brain structure and chemistry are hereditary, this processing style is passed down genetically.
