“A recent study published in Scientific Reports suggests a notable geographical link between global soil fertility and the average intelligence quotient of nations. The findings provide evidence that the nutritional quality of local soils might play an indirect role in shaping human cognitive development on a worldwide scale.

Human brain development relies heavily on adequate nutrition, particularly the intake of essential minerals and vitamins. Plants and animals absorb these nutrients from the earth, meaning human diets are deeply connected to the health of the ground beneath their feet. When soil lacks vital elements like iron, zinc, or iodine, the food grown in it tends to be nutritionally deficient. Deficiencies in these specific nutrients are known to negatively affect cognitive growth, especially in young children.

Zinc and iron are necessary for the central nervous system to build physical structures and produce the chemicals that allow brain cells to communicate. Severe or long-lasting dietary shortages can lead to persistent cognitive impairments and learning difficulties.”

The results should be interpreted as evidence that soil fertility is one potentially important environmental correlate of human intelligence rather than a dominant or exclusive determinant. Read more about this fascinating study.

🌱 Compost Like a Pro: Turn Kitchen Scraps into Garden Gold 🌱
Composting is one of the easiest and most powerful ways to improve your soil naturally while reducing household waste. Healthy compost feeds your plants, supports beneficial microbes, improves water retention, and helps create stronger roots and greener growth.

Here’s how to compost properly:
♻️ What You CAN Compost (“Greens” + “Browns”)
✅ Greens (Nitrogen-Rich Materials)
• Fruit & vegetable scraps
• Coffee grounds & tea bags
• Fresh grass clippings
• Plant trimmings
✅ Browns (Carbon-Rich Materials)
• Dry leaves
• Cardboard & newspaper
• Straw or hay
• Small twigs

💡 A good rule of thumb:Use about 2–3 parts browns to 1 part greens for balanced decomposition.

🚫 Avoid Adding
• Meat, dairy, or oily foods
• Pet waste
• Diseased plants
• Chemically treated wood or glossy paper

☀️ Location MattersPlace your compost pile or bin in a partially shaded area with good drainage.

🔄 Turn Your PileMix or turn your compost every 1–2 weeks to add oxygen and speed up decomposition.

🌧️ Keep It Moist — Not SoakedYour compost should feel like a wrung-out sponge. Too dry = slow breakdown. Too wet = bad odors. Add some to help break things down quicker! It helps boost microbial activity by 5x!

🌿 When It’s ReadyFinished compost is dark, crumbly, and smells earthy — not rotten. Add it to garden beds, containers, lawns, and around trees for healthier growth naturally.
Healthy soil starts with healthy habits 🌎
Compost today, grow stronger tomorrow.

IT’S TEA THYME! A fun way to consume some sunshine on these beautiful sunny days and to use up some of those excess herbs growing in your garden, is to craft up a little Sun Tea…All you have to do is gather some of your favorite herbs around the garden (or your cupboard), throw them in a glass container, fill the container with water, cover, and just let your concoction bask in the sunshine and slowly steep while you continue on with your day! In a few hours, you’ll have a lovely tea that’s sunshine infused and ready to enjoy as is, or over ice…You can even add some honey!

Pictured here are some herbs I’ll typically use for this (mainly because that’s what’s growing outside my window). However, there are plenty of ingredients and ways to get a little more creative!

The next time you have strawberries, don’t throw away the tops! The tops can be enjoyed in tea…Did you know strawberry leaves are high in vitamin C, iron, and calcium, as well as contain tannins, which helps with digestion, nausea, and stomach cramps?! Soo much medicine in our plants that many of us are unaware of…

What’s in your cup?
