Vintage Oaks Health Pulse: Natural Support for Mood and Stress
Hey neighbors! Low mood, stress, and anxiety touch all of us at times. Here's the evidence on natural approaches, and when to reach out for more help.
Omega-3s (EPA and DHA)
Among the best-supported nutrients for mood. Omega-3s modestly improve depressive symptoms, especially as an add-on to standard treatment.
St. John's Wort
More effective than placebo for mild to moderate depression. Important caution: it interacts with many medications (including antidepressants, blood thinners, and others) and can cause serotonin syndrome, so provider oversight is essential.
Saffron and SAMe
Both showed benefit for depressive symptoms in trials, either alone or as add-ons.
For Anxiety and Stress
Ashwagandha, chamomile, lavender, and magnesium appear helpful in early studies, though the research quality is limited.
A Few Honest Reminders
- These are not substitutes for treatment of moderate or severe depression.
- Supplements can interact with medications, St. John's wort is a notable example.
- Exercise and social connection have strong evidence for mood.
- If sadness, anxiety, or hopelessness lingers, please reach out to a provider. If you ever have thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 right away.
