When it comes to gut health nutrition… it’s wild out there!

From going carnivore, taking 20 different supplements, fasting for multiple days, coffee enemas, and calling every food toxic while having no problem sipping a cocktail (an actual toxin). I’ve heard it all and no wonder my clients come to me feeling so restricted and confused.

Learning to listen to your body, adding foods in that can benefit your gut, reducing stress, and working with a gut health dietitian can all help you start to improve your digestive health.

What would your holiday weekend look like if you didn’t have to worry about uncomfortable digestive symptoms?

Digestive issues are common during holidays, but did you know that simply stressing about these may be contributing?

When I was struggling with poor digestion, my diet was very restricted. So when holidays would come around I would give myself permission to eat everything (in quantities that did not feel good), drink more alcohol, not prioritize hydration, and I would feel stressed because I knew I was going to be feeling it afterwards.

Since improving my gut health, I follow no diet restrictions and therefore on holiday weekends I just enjoy the food and don’t stress about it! And my digestion isn’t much different than any other day.

You can improve your digestive health when you focus on adding beneficial foods, stop restricting your diet, prioritize stress management, and learn to listen to your body again.

Breakfast is the most commonly skipped meal, but it is an opportunity to get a head start on your fiber intake for the day.

Breakfast should include carbohydrate, protein, fat, AND fiber. Fiber has health benefits including improving digestion, lowering cholesterol, keeping you full, blood sugar management, and lowering risk of colon cancer. This is why fad diets such as the carnivore diet and very low carb diets blow my mind because you are missing all of these benefits.

Fiber can come from plant foods including fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes. Including fiber with all of your meals and snacks can benefit your gut health.

Here are a few of my favorite breakfasts:

🔹Loaded Greek yogurt bowls with granola, chia seeds, and fruit
🔹Oats with berries and nut butters
🔹Smoothie with fruit, greens, Greek yogurt, oats, chia seeds, nut butters, and whole milk
🔹Whole wheat toast with eggs and fruit
🔹Whole wheat toast with avocado, hard boiled eggs, and EBTB seasoning
🔹 Kodiak Cakes pancakes with berries, maple syrup and a drizzle of almond butter

What are your favorite high fiber breakfasts? Comment below 👇

My first baby started his first day of his last year of preschool yesterday 😭

Thankful for my business and the freedom it has given me to stay home part-time with my babies. Can’t believe this is our last year until he goes off to school full time. I will be soaking it all in ❤️

Cutting out lactose because you’re on a low FODMAP diet and aren’t sure what alternatives you can have? Let this be your guide! 😊

If you want to have regular dairy, the good news is there are many lactose-free options now available! Most cheese is also low in lactose and can fit into your diet.

Many of the plant based milk alternatives are also low FODMAP. Make sure you select fortified options so you are still getting calcium in.

Thinking about trying a low FODMAP diet? Make sure you work with a registered dietitian that specializes in digestive health!

Where are my coffee lovers at?! 💁‍♀️
A cup of coffee in the morning can be part of your morning digestive health routine. ☕️

Coffee (and other hot liquids) can help get digestion moving in the morning. 💩
Drinking your beverage in a relaxed environment before jumping into the chaos of the day can also be helpful.

However if you have other digestive issues including acid reflux, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, or diarrhea predominant IBS you may want to be careful with caffeine. Also pay attention to how coffee affects you in the morning.

We love coffee around here and can’t wait to support you on your journey to improving your digestive health!

A low FODMAP diet can be very restrictive, especially if you are just cutting foods out and not knowing what can replace these foods. FODMAPs are a group of carbohydrates that digest quickly and are poorly absorbed. When they reach the small intestine they may ferment and cause uncomfortable symptoms including abdominal bloating, pain, and/or diarrhea.

Remember- the restrictive part of the low FODMAP diet should only last 2-6 weeks. If you aren’t feeling better by this point then you probably aren’t having an issue with FODMAPs! After the 2-6 weeks if your symptoms are better then it’s time to add foods back in and figure out which groups may be causing a problem for you.

And NEVER start a low FODMAP diet without working with a dietitian that specializes in digestive health disorders. If you are considering a low FODMAP diet, we can help determine if this diet is right for you.

Spoiler alert… I still have fun!

I stopped drinking alcohol at the end of 2023 because I was pregnant, but what I didn’t know is that this would become my lifestyle even afterwards.

I thankfully never had a rock bottom moment with alcohol, but there were periods of time where it was definitely a problem for me. And after having my first child I significantly reduced it but was still noticing a lot of uncomfortable digestive symptoms, anxiety that lasted for days afterwards, and just not feeling right. I also thought about drinking often and couldn’t enjoy being in the moment because I was just waiting for the part of the day that we got to drink. And I didn’t like this.

So when I stopped, I saw how much better I felt. I had minimal digestive issues, my anxiety was significantly reduced, I had more patience for my kids, and I was able to start enjoying events without drinking. This a wasn’t easy at first, but thankfully the alcohol-free alternatives have helped so much! I enjoy the taste and relaxing with a drink in my hand, so thankfully I’ve found options that help satisfy this. And so for me giving up alcohol just made sense and honestly now I don’t even miss it!

I don’t push alcohol-free lifestyles onto my clients, but I do help those that want to have it in a healthier way as part of improving their digestive health.

Routine is important for healthy digestion, but what happens when you travel? Many people are taking end of summer trips right now and may just assume that uncomfortable digestive issues come with that.
But… it doesn’t have to!

While your digestion may not be perfect when you travel, it shouldn’t change so much that it can ruin part of your trip.

I used to have multiple days of feeling miserable when I traveled. But this was because I was so restricted during my daily life that travel was my excuse to let all of that go. So I would eat portions that felt uncomfortable, not pay attention to how food was making me feel, drank lots of alcohol and wasn’t mindful about hydration, and felt stressed about food because I knew I was going to feel miserable.
But since learning to listen to my body I have literally no diet restrictions as long as I am eating mindfully. I always carry my water bottle and have stopped drinking alcohol because that’s what made sense for me personally. I also enjoy the local cuisine and don’t stress if my diet isn’t following my usual routine. I do carry snacks with me so that I listen my own hunger.

You don’t have to suffer when you travel!
