The LSU LCMC Health Cancer Center has a Biobank that helps advance cancer research across Louisiana and the Gulf South.

The Biobank collects and securely stores tissue, blood and other samples voluntarily provided by patients. Researchers can use these samples to better understand cancer and explore new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease.

A proud day for the LSU LCMC Health Cancer Center and for cancer care in Louisiana!

We were honored to celebrate the expansion of cancer care at University Medical Center New Orleans, an important milestone that will help connect more patients with highly specialized physicians, innovative treatments and clinical trials close to home.

This expansion strengthens the partnership between LSU Health New Orleans and LCMC Health, advances our shared journey toward NCI designation and builds a stronger future for cancer research and care across Louisiana.

Good nutrition can support overall health, help the body cope during cancer treatment, and may reduce the risk of certain cancers. But no single food can prevent or cure cancer.

Build balanced meals around:

- Colorful fruits and vegetables
- Whole grains
- Beans and other plant-based proteins
- Lean protein sources
- Healthy fats
- Plenty of fluids

During cancer treatment, nutritional needs and food tolerance may change. Small, frequent meals can sometimes help, but personalized advice from your oncology team or a registered dietitian is best.

A personalized vaccine is showing promise in helping prevent melanoma from returning.

Dr. Lucio Miele, director of the LSU LCMC Health Cancer Center, spoke with WWL-TV about how the vaccine is designed around the unique characteristics of each patient’s tumor and what this approach could mean for the future of cancer treatment.

While additional research is still needed, the findings represent an encouraging step toward more precise, personalized care.

Congratulations to LSU Health New Orleans MD/PhD student Eric Eymard, who received more than $41,000 through an F30 award from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to support his continued training and research.

Eric is studying how the immune system responds during initial infection with Epstein-Barr virus, a common virus associated with several cancers. His work could help identify new strategies to prevent EBV infection and the cancers linked to it.

For the fifth consecutive year, the Louisiana Breast and Cervical Health Program has received CDC funding to continue providing no-cost breast and cervical cancer screenings and patient navigation across Louisiana.

Since 2002, the program has screened more than 118,000 women helping detect 1,648 breast cancers and 249 cervical cancers.

What if a few drops of blood collected at home could help advance cancer research?

Dr. Jiri Adamec of LSU LCMC Health Cancer Center is developing a plasma separation card that separates and stabilizes blood samples in minutes, allowing them to be mailed from nearly anywhere for analysis.

By making blood collection easier for people in rural communities and others with limited access to health care, this research could help identify early signs of cancer, expand participation in research and support more personalized approaches to prevention and treatment.
