🌿 REAL CLIENT QUESTION:
“When should my child start getting facials?”
This is such a good question — and the answer isn't “the earlier, the better” when it comes to professional treatments.
But the earlier they learn good skincare habits, the better. 🤍
Tweens and teens don't need a complicated 10-step routine. Dermatologists recommend keeping things simple, gentle and consistent.
Start with the basics:
🫧 Gentle cleanser
Cleanse once or twice daily, especially after sweating or sport. Look for fragrance-free, non-drying products.
💧 Light moisturiser
Choose a lightweight, fragrance-free, non-comedogenic moisturiser. Ingredients such as ceramides, glycerine and hyaluronic acid can be great for supporting hydration.
☀️ SPF 30+ every morning
Broad-spectrum sunscreen is one of the best habits they can develop early.
And what about exfoliating?
Gentle is the key.
I don't recommend harsh scrubbing or DIY exfoliation for young skin. Baking soda might be a favourite natural ingredient, but regular physical scrubbing can irritate the skin barrier.
If acne, blackheads or persistent breakouts become a concern, that's when their skincare routine may need to change — and sometimes a dermatologist is the best person to guide treatment.
So when is a facial appropriate?
There isn't one magic age.
A gentle, age-appropriate facial can be a lovely way to introduce a young person to proper skincare, skin hygiene and self-care, particularly once they're experiencing puberty-related oiliness, congestion or breakouts.
At Dissel Blom Spa, my Teenage Glow Facial is designed specifically with this in mind. 🌿
