Can you suddenly become allergic to red meat? 🥩
Surprisingly, yes.
Alpha-gal syndrome is an emerging food allergy associated with tick bites that can cause reactions after eating beef, pork, lamb, and other mammalian products.
And unlike many food allergies, the reaction may not happen immediately. Symptoms can appear hours after eating, making the connection much harder to recognize.
Possible signs may include:
• Hives or itching
• Swelling
• Stomach pain or digestive symptoms
• Shortness of breath
• Dizziness
• In severe cases, anaphylaxis
And it may be more common than you think. The CDC estimates that as many as 450,000 people in the U.S. may have been affected by Alpha-gal Syndrome.
At Primary Prevention Center, our updated IgE allergy testing can help us take a closer look at potential food and environmental triggers, including red meat related allergies, as part of a comprehensive evaluation.
