✨ The second week of UCGHI's Global Health Bootcamp featured diverse lectures from amazing researchers across the UC system. Starting off with an energetic conversation from Dr. Sam Ying at UC Riverside on the importance of water quality, access to safe water, and innovative technology used to combat water contamination across parts of the Coachella Valley in California!

A deep dive into global nutrition, food systems, and maternal and child health presented by Dr. Isabel Madzorera at UC Berkeley Public Health gave students a comprehensive overview on the role nutrition plays through the life course, particularly in regions where determinants such as diet, services, and cultural norms can drastically shape outcomes for children and women.

Rounding out the third session, students heard from UCGHI Bootcamp Program Director, Dr. Chris Cotter, on the history of malaria and its origin story shaping the field of global health, in addition to how malaria control and eradication efforts dating back to the 1940s differ to control measures used today. 🌍

⭐ The final session of UCGHI's Global Health Bootcamp featured a jam packed day kicked off by Porter DeLaney from the Kyle House Group speaking on global health policy and how advocacy efforts have shifted in the ongoing political climate.

Dr. Laury Oaks from UC Santa Barbara then introduced students to the intersection of anthropology, reproductive politics and health justice, particularly as they pertain to significant social movements both globally and locally.

Building from Dr. Oaks' presentation, UCLA School of Law's Lara Stemple provided insight on abortion law in a global context while addressing the impacts of overturned policies surrounding reproductive care in the United States.

Threading these various global health topics together was Dr. Madhavi Dandu from UC Global Health Institute and UCSF Institute for Global Health Sciences who gave students an important overview on cultural humility and cultural competence when working in the field of global public health.

✨ The UCGHI Global Health Bootcamp is a structured 2-week virtual education program designed to introduce rising high school seniors to foundational concepts in global and community health through interactive lectures, case discussions, and professional development workshops. UCGHI is thrilled to continue to support the next generation of global health leaders! 🌍

Week 1 featured a welcome orientation and first session led by the UCGHI Program Team with 54 rising high school seniors from across California! Key topics including Foundations of Global Health and the Current State of Global Health Funding were presented by UCGHI Bootcamp Program Director, Dr. Chris Cotter, and UCGHI Director, Dr. Madhavi Dandu, respectively. These introductory presentations provided students with an understanding of the current landscape in global health.

⭐ The second session featured an engaging panel on UCGHI Student Career Pathways with Summer Researchers in Global Health (SRGH) alum UCSF Institute for Global Health Sciences, Jason Nishio, and UCGHI Planetary Health Center of Expertise Water and Health Fellow + Student Ambassador alum UC Merced Public Health Department, Felix Opoku!

An interactive presentation followed on local and global zoonotic diseases by One Health Institute Sonja Montanus and UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine Dr. Rebecca Radisic who introduced students to the diversity of zoonoses while hearing firsthand about fieldwork and research sampling techniques with wild animals, rodents, and livestock!

Bringing it all together, students worked in teams to tackle the complex public health challenge of Measles in scenarios where several stakeholder groups are tasked to navigate the resurgence of this contagious disease.

The GloCal Health Fellowship is a 12-month, mentored research fellowship that provides aspiring global health researchers with outstanding interdisciplinary education and training in innovative research designed to improve health for populations around the world. Sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Fogarty International Center (FIC) and the UC Global Health Institute, the GloCal Health Fellowship supports awarded fellows from all 10 UC campuses as well as 29 affiliated sites across 22 countries.

We were proud to support and co-host the One-Day Biotechnology Student Capstone Symposium with UCSF Institute for Global Health Sciences and Galileo Academy of Science and Technology. From exploring the impacts of environmental exposures to investigating innovations in biotechnology, these high school students demonstrated curiosity, rigor, and a strong commitment to improving health outcomes.

UCGHI supports early global health career pathways so that young scholars can engage in science and contribute to building global health solutions. Initiatives like this highlight what's possible when students are given the space to ask big questions and share their ideas. We look forward to seeing where these future leaders go next!

Climate change, emerging diseases, food systems, and ecosystem health don’t exist in isolation. Addressing them requires people who can think across disciplines and work in real-world settings. That’s exactly what this summer’s cohort of the Rx One Health Field Institute will do in Ireland.

In partnership with the UC Global Health Institute's Center for Planetary Health and University College Dublin, students will build practical skills to navigate complex global health challenges.

This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to training the next generation of leaders. Investing in people is one of the most meaningful ways we can invest in the future of our planet.

Join the UC Global Health Institute for an engaging Grand Rounds on nutrition and food security on Friday, May 8th, 2026 from 12:00-1:00pm (PT), featuring a multidisciplinary panel of experts working at the intersection of global nutrition and food access.

This session will bring together diverse perspectives on the structural, social, and health dimensions of food access, from local policy to global research and clinical practice. Together, panelists will explore innovative strategies to address food insecurity, advance equitable food systems, and improve health outcomes across communities in California and around the world.

🌍⚕️Our Global Health Education Program Director and Distinguished Professor of Population Health & Disease Prevention at , Dr. Oladele Ogunseitan, participated in the roadmap steering committee meeting in Geneva, Switzerland to strengthen the global public health workforce.

The WHO roadmap outlines an approach for policymakers, planners, and educators to address health system strengthening to deliver the full range of essential health services and functions that meet population needs in times of stability and emergency.

Through Dr. Ogunseitan’s participation on this initiative, the system is positioned to help shape international strategies for public health education and workforce capacity.
