OSMA Past President Larry Bookman, M.D., has seen the impact of Medicaid expansion firsthand. He explains why protecting Medicaid expansion matters for Oklahoma’s patients, hospitals, health care workers and economy:

"As a physician, I've watched Medicaid expansion make a real difference for Oklahoma's patients and economy. It has kept rural hospitals solvent, their staff employed, and communities from being left behind.

Caring for Oklahomans on SoonerCare and SoonerSelect is more than a line item on a balance sheet; it’s an investment in our state and our people. Medicaid supports jobs at hospitals and clinics in rural communities and metros alike.

One candidate for Governor has made it clear he wants to unwind Oklahoma’s Medicaid expansion. Rolling back Medicaid means health care jobs disappear, many people lose their health care and the cost of uncompensated care shifts onto every other patient and every business that pays for insurance. An administration determined to eliminate our recent gains is not saving money.

Oklahoma has real access gaps. Rural communities cannot absorb another round of hospital closures. Reducing Medicaid coverage will result in overwhelming ERs when primary care is no longer available to thousands of Oklahomans, pushing the cost of this more expensive care onto families and employers who can least afford it.”
