Does your baby always seem to look toward the same side?
Maybe you've also noticed a flat spot, a favorite feeding side, a persistent head tilt, or that movement seems easier in one direction than the other.
These patterns don't automatically mean something is wrong—but they can give us useful information about how a baby is moving and developing.
Our September blog takes a closer look at:
• baby head preference
• head shape and positional plagiocephaly
• torticollis and movement symmetry
• feeding-side preferences
• what we assess during an infant cranial evaluation
• what gentle pediatric cranial care actually looks like
• when collaboration or referral may be appropriate
One of the biggest things we want parents to know?
You don't need to have the diagnosis before you're allowed to ask the question.
If you've noticed a consistent pattern in your baby, it's worth bringing up.

Why do we sometimes check primitive reflexes in school-aged kids??

Primitive reflexes are automatic movement patterns that are important during infancy and early development.

As the brain and body mature, those early patterns should become integrated into more complex, intentional movement.

When we're evaluating an older child, primitive reflex testing can be one piece of a much bigger picture that also includes things like:

• Balance
• Coordination
• Posture
• Eye and head movement
• Motor planning
• Strength and stability

It's not about finding one reflex and blaming it for everything.

It's about looking at how all the pieces of a child's development are working together.

We'll be sharing more about this soon!

A little back-to-school posture reminder: there is no perfect sitting position.

Kids slouch.

They sit sideways.

They tuck a foot underneath themselves.

They wiggle, lean, stretch, and change positions.

And that's okay.

Instead of trying to keep kids in one “perfect” posture, we like to think about movement variety.

Can they comfortably change positions?
Do they get opportunities to move throughout the day?
Can they sit, stand, squat, run, climb, and play without discomfort?

The best posture is often simply the next posture. 💛

Back to school = a change in how kids use their bodies.

More desk time, more reading and writing, heavier backpacks, organized sports, and less free movement during the day can make things show up that weren't as noticeable during summer.

A few things we pay attention to in our pediatric patients:

→ Frequent slouching or leaning while sitting
→ Complaints of neck, back, or leg discomfort
→ Difficulty sitting comfortably for homework
→ Headaches after school
→ Noticeable asymmetry during standing or movement
→ Changes in coordination or endurance
→ Kids who constantly feel like they need to move

Not every posture quirk or wiggle is a problem; kids are supposed to move!

But when something is persistent, uncomfortable, or interfering with everyday activities, it's worth taking a closer look!🧠

Playground. Bike ride. Walk the dog. Climb a tree. Kick a ball around. Dig in the dirt. Go for a family hike. 🚴

Kids build strength, coordination, balance, body awareness, and confidence through something incredibly simple:

PLAY!

No perfect exercise program required.

So, if everyone has survived the first week back to school, consider this your permission slip to get outside, move, and play this weekend. ☀️

Back to school is a BIG nervous system transition.

New classrooms. New schedules. Earlier mornings. More sitting. More noise. More social interaction. More expectations.

Even kids who are excited to be back can come home tired, emotional, wiggly, quiet, or just completely done.

One of our favorite back-to-school reminders for families:

🫶Movement before more demands🫶

After school, try giving kids a little time to run, climb, swing, jump, play outside, or simply decompress before jumping straight into homework and evening responsibilities.

Sometimes their bodies need a transition just as much as their brains do. 💛

🎒 Backpack check!

Back-to-school means backpacks are suddenly along for the ride every day.

A few simple things we like parents to watch for:

• Both straps are being used
• The backpack sits close to the body rather than hanging low
• Kids can walk, climb stairs, and move comfortably while wearing it
• They aren't noticeably leaning forward or to one side to compensate for the weight

And remember: kids are growing and changing quickly. A backpack that worked great last year may fit very differently this year.

A quick fit check now can help keep those growing bodies moving comfortably all school year!

Some weeks children seem to master something new every day.

Other weeks they practice, repeat, and consolidate skills before the next leap.

Both are normal parts of healthy development!

Progress isn't measured by speed - it's measured by continued growth over time. 📏
