FLARING

Focusing on the small details when there is no room for error is our specialty at MicroLumen.

Flared tubing is one example.

Using heat and a flaring mandrel, a tube's inside diameter (ID) and outside diameter (OD) are expanded to create a precise flare at the end of the tube.

This seemingly simple process creates the a precise ending with an expanded tip. Flaring can be done in a multitude of sizes and shapes to meet the needs of high performance medical devices.

How do you adjust the flexibility, stiffness, and durability of a catheter lumen?

It's a question medical device engineers ask our team every day.

As high performance medical devices navigate complex anatomy, they must balance the flexibility needed to track tortuous pathways with the strength required to maintain lumen integrity.

One design factor plays a major role in achieving that balance: braid wire PIC count (per inch crosses).

Engineering for flexibility:
A higher PIC count increases the braid angle, which can improve flexibility, hoop strength, torque transmission, burst pressure, and crush resistance.

Engineering for strength:
A lower PIC count creates a lower braid angle, often resulting in greater longitudinal stiffness, and higher kink resistance.

What’s the challenge?
There isn't a universal "best" PIC count. Every device has its own unique performance requirements. What works for one application may not work for another. The goal is to find the right balance between flexibility, strength, torque response, durability, and stability for the intended use.

That's why we work with leading medical device engineers to develop custom tubing and sub-assemblies designed to meet your specific application and device needs.

These are just three of the many specialized capabilities our team offers:

1. Tipping & Flaring:
Tipping (atraumatic and flexible) adds thermoplastic material to the end of a tube, while flaring creates a larger opening at the end of the tube. These features can help improve fluid flow, aid insertion, and support overall device performance.

2. Laser Machining:
Precise laser machined holes can be added to a tube shaft for applications such as drug delivery and bond reduction.

3. Multi-Lumen Profiles:
Multiple lumens are incorporated into a single tube to create separate channels, allowing simultaneous functions within one device for drug delivery and complex minimally invasive procedures.

Beyond these capabilities, we also offer marker band embedding, reinforced tubing, PTFE, and other advanced materials and processes.

Thermoset vs. Thermoplastic: What's the Difference?

While both are polymers used to make our high-performance tubing, they behave very differently when exposed to heat.

•Thermosets are fully cured materials that permanently set into shape. Once cured, they cannot be melted, reshaped, or reprocessed.

•Thermoplastics, such as Pebax® and Tecoflex®, do not permanently cure. They can be heated, melted, cooled, and reformed multiple times, making them ideal for processes that require reflow such as joining a shaft to an atraumatic tip or varying its outer diameter over a discrete length.

Understanding these material differences is critical when selecting the right solution for medical device and manufacturing applications.

At MicroLumen, we offer versatile solutions customized for your medical device needs. These solutions include tubing sub-assemblies.

One sub-assembly we offer is encapsulating radiopaque marker bands into tubing. These are small, thin pieces of metal joined with tubes to enhance visibility under fluoroscopy. By absorbing and scattering X-rays, marker bands help surgeons accurately track and position devices during procedures.

Our marker bands are typically composed of 90% platinum and 10% iridium, providing the strength and durability that is necessary for demanding medical applications and bodily pathways.

Marker bands can be secured to tubing through several methods including but not limited to FEP reflow, crimping, swaging or bonding with adhesive.
