This year, Dr. Athena Ramos was invited to select an artwork from the Great Plains Art Museum's permanent collection to be highlighted in the exhibition titled "With a Little Help from Our Friends: New Perspectives on the Collection". This exhibition was in honor of the Center for Great Plains Studies' 50th anniversary.

Dr. Ramos, as a Great Plains Fellow, chose a piece by George Tuck, called "Cowboys", from the Flat Places and Interesting People Series, 1998. Dr. Ramos said, "I chose this piece because it speaks to my current research project, the Cattle Feedyard Worker Health Study, where we are exploring physical, mental, and social well-being among this vital agricultural workforce. My eyes were immediately drawn to the cowboys on horseback, reminding me that feedyards are one of the last places one can be a cowboy. For me, this image captures the unique skills, quiet strength, and spirit of these workers. Although this is a still photo, it represents movement, of course movement of cattle, but also movement of people on the feedyard and to the feedyard, including oftentimes coming from other countries to work at the feedyard."

🌟 Congratulations, Ashley Texel! 🌟

This summer, Ashley Texel joined the CS-CASH team through the Nebraska INBRE Program, a statewide research initiative that provides highly qualified undergraduate students with opportunities to conduct biomedical research in academic laboratories across Nebraska.
During her internship, Ashley analyzed agricultural fatality and injury incidents involving youth ages 0-19 that occurred between 2012 and 2025. Her research contributes to a better understanding of childhood and adolescent agricultural injuries and helps inform future prevention efforts.

Ashley presented her findings at the Nebraska INBRE Conference held August 2-4 in Nebraska City, where her hard work and dedication were recognized with 4th Place in the Faculty Poster Judging Competition and a Top 3 Student-Voted Best Poster Award! 🏆
We are proud of Ashley's accomplishments and grateful for her contributions to agricultural safety research.

Please share the information below with your fire department contacts, EMS, and others who may be involved in fighting grain or wood related fires.

The NIOSH Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program released a Safety and Health Advisory today on Oxygen-limiting silos.

Please share this alert with your agriculture and forestry industry and Extension partners. Facility operators need to be aware that directing water or foam into an oxygen-limiting silo may cause an explosion. NIOSH has investigated several fatal incidents involving these silos over the years and have often found facility operators are unaware of the potential for an explosion during firefighting activities, there is no signage to alert firefighters of the hazard, and firefighters lack knowledge/training on best practices for fires in oxygen-limiting silos. Hopefully, we can help prevent tragedies like the one detailed in this publication through increased awareness.
