The Douglas CARES Conference on 8.24 was an illuminating day of education and collaboration composed of healthcare workers across the spectrum in Nebraska.

Director of NE Harm Reduction Paul Weishapl was able to participate in a panel of those with lived experience. The discussion ranged from the stigma opioid users face, the panel’s experiences and potential best practices for a path to less judgement.

It was a great opportunity for organizations working toward helping the most vulnerable populations to collaborate on ways to help reduce harm in the community.

Austin provided free education and fentanyl testing strips courtesy of WiseBatch while Amy discussed proper use and handed out free Narcan.

A wonderful collaborative community event to kick off the weekend!

The difference between a life and an overdose often comes down to one thing: real human connection.

When leaving treatment or transitional care, individuals facing substance use and mental health challenges hit a critical turning point. That’s where Peer Support Specialists step in.

By using their own lived experiences, they meet people exactly where they are—building trust, bridging gaps in care, and keeping people alive so they can choose how to live.

Angela DeRossett, Director of the Opioid Program at , shares the vital role peer support plays in building community. 🎥 Watch her story above.

So I’m sober… now what? 🤔

In early recovery, figuring out what to do with your time—without alcohol in the mix—can feel completely overwhelming.

🍾The Reality: According to research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), boredom and social isolation are cited as two of the primary triggers for relapse, with up to 40%–60% of individuals experiencing a lapse during early recovery phases.

❤️‍🩹 The Struggle: It’s normal to feel under-socialized, under-stimulated, and uncertain about how to build a fun social life without drinking.

That’s why the Nebraska Harm Reduction Program and the Munroe-Meyer Institute are hosting a FREE Sober Block Party! We want to help you explore recovery, connect with community, and have a genuine blast.
