September is National Falls Prevention Awareness Month - a time to recognize and address stability challenges.
An estimated 3 million older adults visit emergency departments each year because of falls, and research shows that many falls can be prevented through evidence-based interventions such as exercise, medication review, and home-safety improvements.
How can loved ones help?
If you're reading this because you're worried about a parent, grandparent, or loved one — your concern is both valid and valuable. Often it takes a family member to notice the shuffling gait, the hesitation at the top of the stairs, or the quiet refusal to go out in the rain.
You don't need to wait for a fall to act. Here's how to help:
- Bring up fall prevention as a conversation about staying independent, not about frailty or limitation.
- Accompany your loved one to a PT evaluation — your observations about their daily movement are genuinely useful clinical information.
- Do a home walk-through together: look for throw rugs, dark hallways, tubs without grab bars, and frequently used items stored at awkward heights.
- Ask their doctor or pharmacist to review all current medications for fall-related side effects — this is a quick win that is often overlooked.
- Encourage consistent exercise, even gentle walking, as a protective habit rather than a chore.
- Celebrate progress. Rebuilding strength and confidence takes time, and your encouragement matters enormously.
