The place that hurts isn't always where the problem begins.

Muscles respond to how we move, compensate and protect. Fascia can become restricted. Scar tissue can influence mobility. Swelling changes pressure within tissues. And sometimes one area works harder simply because another isn't moving as it should.

That's why therapeutic massage is more than applying pressure to a painful area.

Depending on what is found, treatment may incorporate myofascial techniques, trigger-point or neuromuscular work, assisted stretching, manual lymphatic techniques and other approaches selected for a specific purpose.

Sometimes the goal is relaxation. Other times it's improving movement, reducing restriction, supporting circulation or lymphatic flow, or helping the body recover.

The technique matters. But understanding why you're using it matters even more.
