Health Information Associates

Health Information Associates Health Information Associates (HIA) is a privately held company that was founded in 1992 by Betsy Bailey, RHIA and her father, Deane Beamer, MHA.

Since 1992, HIA has been the leading provider of compliance audits, coding support services and clinical documentation audit services for hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, physician groups and other healthcare entities. Prior to 1992, Betsy held Director of HIM positions at two hospitals in Virginia. Deane has over thirty years of experience as an administrator working in various hospitals th

roughout the Southeast. The HIA family knows what counts – experience, commitment, integrity, and education. The success we’ve experienced these past 30 years is due in large part to our dedication to these values. We’ve set them as our standards in everything we do, and they are the reason we can provide the highest quality coding review and support services in the industry. When clients can depend on quality services delivered the right way, they find success, and that’s how we measure our own.

Many coding audit programs don't struggle with accuracy—they struggle with visibility.

When findings live in spreadsheets, it's harder to identify trends, measure improvement, and drive consistent action across teams. As audit volume grows, manual processes often create more risk than leaders realize.

Read why spreadsheets stop scaling for coding audits and what to look for before they become a barrier to quality improvement.

If your coding team looks productive on paper but feels stretched day to day, that gap matters.

High output doesn’t always mean sustainable performance—especially when complexity, documentation challenges, and constant decision-making are part of every chart.

Over time, that pressure shows up in ways that are harder to measure: fatigue, second-guessing, and turnover.

The question isn’t just “Are we hitting numbers?”
It’s “Are we supporting the people behind them?”

Elevated troponin ≠ Type 2 MI.

Clinical validation depends on more than lab values—it requires supporting symptoms, evidence of ischemia, and an underlying cause.

Missing any of these? The diagnosis may not be supported.

From orthopedics and neurosurgery to researching new procedures, Valerie is always learning something new. She prefers peace and quiet while working—with her Aussie Harper usually hanging out by her feet and a tiny rubber whale keeping her company on her desk.

Curious minds fit right in here at HIA.

AI can definitely speed up audits.
But auditing isn’t just about getting through charts faster.

At the end of the day, someone still has to stand behind the findings.

And that’s where speed and accuracy don’t always line up.

Corpectomy coding isn’t as straightforward as it looks.

It all comes down to intent—are you decompressing the spinal cord, or removing diseased bone?

That one decision changes everything: root operation, body system, and even how fusion is reported.

If you’re coding spine procedures, this is one you want to get right.
