As Pennsylvania's population ages and communities continue to face shortages of primary care providers, the demand for NPs is growing, and the workforce is responding.

NPs are projected to be the fastest-growing job in 42 states through 2034.

That includes Pennsylvania, where NP employment is projected to grow 39% over the next decade!

Patients are increasingly choosing NPs for care, and the workforce projections reflect that growing demand.

Why should an NP who is licensed and certified to practice have to pay another profession for permission to practice?

A North Carolina NP has recently filed a lawsuit challenging the state’s mandatory “collaborative practice agreement” requirement, arguing that it imposes an unnecessary burden on fully licensed and certified NPs.

The lawsuit argues that these mandates do nothing for patient safety and instead hurt patients' access to care.

NP Jamie Gallagher sues North Carolina over costly physician-permission rules that block qualified care and burden patient access.

Hospitals and health systems are increasingly turning to NPs to help meet the demand for care.

One Maryland health system has tripled its advanced practice provider workforce over the past decade.

Maryland began implementing full practice authority for nurse practitioners in 2015.

This growth in NPs has decreased wait times for primary care visits from about four weeks to a week or less, often even same-day!

When the number of qualified healthcare providers grows, patients benefit from more options, shorter wait times, and more accessible health care.

Millions of people living in rural communities face limited access to primary care, but NPs are already playing an important role in changing that.

NPs provide high-quality care in underserved communities and care for patients in rural areas that lack physicians.

It's time for states like Pennsylvania to recognize that access to care shouldn't depend on where you live, and that placing barriers on qualified healthcare providers only hurts the patients who need it the most.

Explore how nurse practitioners are expanding access in rural America — including salaries by state, full practice authority maps, top specialties, and career pathways for RNs.

Multiple lawsuits are currently challenging restrictive practice agreements for NPs, arguing that these requirements may actually be unconstitutional.

These requirements can add costs and red tape for NPs, and they can make it harder for NPs to open practices or practice independently in communities that need more primary care.

Communities need greater access to qualified healthcare providers, not outdated restrictions that limit patients' access to care.

A series of lawsuits challenges state laws governing practice authority and physician supervision for nurse practitioners.

A Commonwealth Fund report found that 92% of rural counties were designated primary care HPSAs in 2023, with 42.6 million people living in these shortage areas.

And by 2037, the number of rural primary care physicians is projected to meet only 68% of demand.

We can't afford to leave qualified providers on the sidelines!

Removing unnecessary, outdated barriers to NP practice can help expand healthcare access where patients need it most.

Rural Americans face significant barriers to accessing adequate primary care; tailored federal and state programs can help address some of these challenges.
