“I get a feeling of not being alone.”

That’s how 79-year-old Barbara Hyman-Weed described her experience with VR in a recent CBS News story.

Barbara was one of many older adults who joined AT&T and Mynd Immersive for a day of virtual reality at the Janet Goeske Foundation & Senior Center in Riverside, California. Through immersive experiences, participants went skydiving, toured the International Space Station, caught a Broadway musical and revisited meaningful places, all alongside friends and neighbors.

These virtual trips do more than entertain. As Mynd Immersive co-founder Chris Brickler explains: “They lift that person out of the four walls of their existence and can reconnect them with nature, with music, with art, all these beautiful energies on our planet that become a little less accessible as people age.”

For older adults like Barbara, that means new experiences, new connections and a world that feels a little bigger again.

🏠 Returning home after a hospital or rehab stay is an important step toward independence. But everyday hazards can be easy to overlook, even in a familiar space. A single accident could undo weeks of progress.

Senior Safety is a VR app built to help patients prepare for discharge. Inside the headset, they explore a virtual kitchen and bathroom and practice identifying potential hazards, building safety awareness in a realistic setting without any real-world risk.

It gives therapy teams a hands-on tool for their sessions, so older adults can get back to daily life with more confidence and independence.

When Stanford's Virtual Human Interaction Lab studied 245 older adults using Mynd, most of them had never worn a VR headset before.

After their sessions, 79.2% of residents reported feeling more positive, and 94.9% of care staff said it benefited their relationships with residents.

This year's theme, "The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives," raises a question at the heart of our work: how do we make sure longer lives are also well-lived?

Something special happened at the AT&T Connected Learning Center at the Janet Goeske Foundation & Senior Center in Riverside, California.

Older adults picked up a VR headset for the first time and traveled to Paris. To Quito. One participant returned to her grandparents' home in Greenville, South Carolina. Others went skydiving, took in a Broadway musical, and got moving with immersive therapy games.

That's the whole idea behind Mynd: making the window to the world bigger for older adults, their minds and bodies healthier, and technology less intimidating along the way.

We're grateful to AT&T and the team at Janet Goeske for hosting, and to everyone who tried something new alongside their friends and neighbors.
