We spend so much time being told to avoid the sun that we have forgotten something important: your body was designed to use it.

When UVB rays hit your skin, they trigger the production of cholecalciferol, your body's own form of vitamin D3. Your liver processes it, your kidneys activate it, and it becomes a steroid hormone that influences over 36 different cell types β€” immune function, mood, heart health, blood sugar, and more.

For most people, 10 to 20 minutes of midday sun on your arms and legs is enough to stimulate meaningful D3 production. Skin tone, latitude, and season all affect how much you actually make.

Getting your levels tested before supplementing is always the smarter approach. Dosing without knowing your baseline means you could be taking too little to matter or more than you need.

We carry professional-grade vitamin D3 and D3 with K2 in store, and we are happy to talk through what makes sense for your specific situation. Book a free Discovery Call if you want to go deeper on your hormone health picture.

Here is something most people have never been told: the average woman applies up to 168 unique chemicals to her body before leaving the house in the morning. And most of those chemicals have never been tested for their hormonal effects.

That is not a scare tactic. That is just where the research stands.

Your skin is not a barrier. It is a sponge. Ingredients from your moisturizer, SPF, and deodorant are absorbed directly into your bloodstream. Sprays and powders get inhaled. Lip products get ingested. And when you are layering 12 to 19 products a day, those exposures add up in ways that individual safety reviews were never designed to assess.

A lot of these products contain what are called endocrine-disrupting chemicals, or EDCs. Parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrance, oxybenzone, triclosan, formaldehyde releasers. These ingredients mimic, block, or confuse your hormones. For women already navigating perimenopause, when hormone levels are fluctuating and your system is more sensitive, the last thing you need is added interference.

The good news is you do not have to throw everything out. Start small. Swap the three products with the most skin contact time: your daily moisturizer, your SPF, and your deodorant. Those three changes alone can meaningfully reduce your daily chemical load.

We carry cleaner options in store and we are always happy to talk through what to look for on a label. Book a free Discovery Call with us to go deeper on your hormone health picture.

Did you know vitamin D isn't technically a vitamin at all? β˜€οΈ
Most vitamins are nutrients you have to get from food. Vitamin D is different.
Your body synthesizes it from sunlight and converts it into a steroid hormone that carries messages to over 36 different cell types. That means it influences far more than just your bones:
βœ… Immune function
βœ… Mood & serotonin production
βœ… Cardiovascular health
βœ… Blood sugar & insulin sensitivity
Here in the Northeast, most of us aren't getting enough, especially as sunlight hours drop. Getting your levels tested is the single best first step. Stop by and ask us about vitamin D testing and which professional-grade D3 supplement is right for your unique levels.

"Your labs are normal." If you've heard that and still felt like something wasn't right, this one is for you.
Perimenopause and thyroid issues are two of the most commonly confused conditions in midlife women, and for good reason. They share almost every symptom: fatigue that sleep doesn't fix, brain fog, thinning hair, weight changes, and irregular cycles. When both are happening at once, one almost always masks the other.
What makes this even trickier is the hormonal overlap. Estrogen fluctuations during perimenopause can increase a binding protein that essentially grabs onto thyroid hormone before it reaches your cells. So even if your thyroid is technically producing enough, your body may not be getting what it needs. And if cortisol is also elevated (which it often is during this transition), it can block your body from converting thyroid hormone into its active, usable form.
This is why a standard TSH test often isn't enough. If you're still feeling off despite normal results, it's worth asking your doctor about a full panel: Free T3 and Free T4, Reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies (TPO and TgAb). Each one tells a different part of the story.
You deserve answers that actually match how you feel, not just numbers on a page.
If you'd like support navigating this, I'd love to connect. Book a free Discovery Call using the link below and we can talk through your symptoms, your labs, and what next steps might look like for you.

One day, you're handling everything just fine. The next, a small thing sends you spiraling and you don't know why.

If that sounds familiar, here's a key fact: estrogen isn't just a reproductive hormone. It directly affects three major brain chemicals.

Serotonin helps manage your mood, calm, and sense of well-being. Dopamine supports motivation, focus, and your ability to feel joy. GABA acts as your brain’s natural brake for stress and anxiety.

During perimenopause, estrogen levels go up and down. When this happens, those brain chemicals change too. Sudden anxiety, low mood, or irritability are not character flaws; they are part of your biology.

You are going through a real physical change. Learning what is happening in your body is the first step to feeling more like yourself again.

You do not have to go through this alone. The right support can make a difference.

If you have questions about hormone health or want to explore what support looks like for you, we're here to help you take the next step toward feeling your best. Schedule a one-on-one wellness consult at Coastal Pharmacy & Wellness by booking a Discovery Call through the link or messaging us directly. We're always happy to talk and answer your questions.

Is your "off switch" broken? πŸŒ™

In perimenopause, your hormones are shifting, and your sleep usually pays the price. If you’re waking up in the middle of the night, it might be time to look at the Progesterone-GABA connection. We love Magnesium Glycinate for its ability to support relaxation, but we love personalized care even more. Our very own Katie Johnstone (PharmD + Certified Health Coach) is here to help you navigate these shifts with confidence.
