💪 June is Men's Mental Health Month — and we're going to say the quiet part out loud.

One of the most heartbreaking things a parent tells us:"I can see my child wants to talk. They just can't get the words out." This is often Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) — a motor speech disorder where the brain has difficulty planning and sequencing the movements needed to produce speech sounds correctly.
Children with CAS:
🔹 May be hard to understand even by close family members
🔹 May show inconsistent errors — saying a word one way, then differently moments later
🔹 May struggle to imitate words even when they understand them completely

CAS is NOT caused by weak muscles or lack of intelligence. And it IS highly treatable — especially with early, specialized intervention.

Last week, Hansel Union had the honor of exhibiting at the ASCV 5K & Family Fun Day Resource Fair — and we left with full hearts.

One of the most powerful things a parent can do between speech therapy sessions? Keep the conversation going — literally.

Here are 3 research-backed techniques your family can use this week:

✏️ Expand what your child says. If they say "dog run," you say "Yes! The big dog is running fast!" You're not correcting — you're modeling, and it works.

📖 Use books as launching pads. After reading, ask "Why do you think the character felt that way?" It builds narrative reasoning and inferencing skills that carry into the classroom.

🚗 Use the car. Screens off, talk on. Car conversations are some of the richest language-learning moments because there are no distractions.

These strategies come directly from the SLP playbook — and they work best when paired with consistent professional support.
