NextStep Raleigh

NextStep Raleigh NextStep Raleigh
A non-profit committed to making life-changing rehabilitation accessible & affordable for those living with paralysis.

Through our activity-based therapy programs we offer the best chance at recovery, independence, and improved health. Activity-Based Therapy (ABT) is based on the research done within the NeuroRecovery Network. ABT shows that activating specific networks of the Central Nervous System leads to improvement of those specific tasks which can potentially lead to recovery. Activity-Based Therapy programs

are not covered by insurance in North Carolina. Due to the out of pocket cost to our members, typically they have used the resources allotted to them through their insurance company and are now attending our facility to maintain recovery while continuing to receive therapy. Our program falls into the continuum of care model. We are an option for individuals needing activity and recovery, long after insurance payment has been suspended and/or as an adjunct to covered therapy services. Our staff has degrees in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Athletic Training and Occupational Therapy and receives regular training through the NeuroRecovery Learning Center.

Every horizon marks both an ending and a beginning.

Beyond it lies something uncharted. Not because no one has traveled there before, but because every person’s journey is uniquely their own.

At NextStep Raleigh, recovery is an ongoing exploration. Each day can bring new discoveries, renewed confidence, and possibilities that continue to unfold. Progress is measured not simply in movement, but in what becomes possible next.

That spirit is at the heart of our 2026 Stand Together Gala: Beyond the Horizon.

On November 1 at Boatman Spirits, we will gather to celebrate the people at the center of our mission and invest in continued access to specialized paralysis recovery programs in our community.

This evening is about how far our clients have come, the people who continue to stay, and the discoveries still waiting beyond the horizon.

Together, we help people discover what lies beyond the horizon.

Tickets and sponsorship opportunities are now available.

Emma needed one tiny adjustment.

Apparently, everyone felt uniquely qualified to assist.

There is not any “just standing” around at NextStep Raleigh. When you see someone standing at NextStep, their nervous system is basically doing overtime.

Weight bearing. Balance. Muscle activation. Sensory input. Postural control. Repetition.

There is a whole lot of work happening under the hood. Neuroplasticity thrives on repetition, challenge and input, and standing gives the body and nervous system a completely different experience.

And sometimes, this may be the only time that person gets to stand all week.

That makes the view from up there pretty important too.

Standing may look simple. But around here, simple is rarely simple.

Sometimes strength is borrowed.

Beyond the Horizon is about looking past what is visible and noticing what helps carry us forward.

Family. Friends. Caregivers. Trainers. The people who keep showing up.

No one can do the hard work for us. Yet none of us are meant to carry it alone.

Who has helped carry the weight when yours felt too heavy?

Up to this point, the Beyond the Horizon reflections have been written from what we have had the privilege of witnessing at NextStep Raleigh.

This week, the perspective shifts.

Becoming is written by Corrie, one of our clients, in her own words about identity, loss, change, and what remains when so much of how you once knew yourself has been altered.

Her reflection does not try to make paralysis easier to explain. It asks something deeper:

Who are we beneath the identities we carry?

We are grateful to Corrie for trusting us with her words and for allowing us to share.

Grateful to TowneBank for bringing nonprofit leaders together today for From Oversight to Impact: Board Governance Essentials, led by Moss+Ross.

Hosted at SAFEchild, the afternoon was a valuable reminder that strong nonprofit leadership is strengthened when we make time to learn alongside one another. We may serve different missions, but many of the questions around governance, strategy, board engagement, stewardship, and organizational leadership are shared.

There is real value in being in the same room, exchanging ideas and perspectives, and learning from others doing this work across our community.

And it felt especially fitting to enjoy lunch from A Place at the Table, another organization doing meaningful work in our community.

Thank you to TowneBank, Moss+Ross, SAFEchild, and A Place at the Table for creating such a thoughtful space for learning and connection.

Growth does not always feel the way we imagine it will.

We think of it as something gained. A new possibility. A step forward.

But growth can ask something of us too.

It can mean stepping back. Letting go. Making room for what comes next, even when part of us would rather hold on to what has been.

This week’s Beyond the Horizon reflection, Seeing Differently, sits in that uncomfortable space where pride and sadness can exist at the same time.

What have you learned to see differently?
