🏳️‍🌈 During Pride Month, we recognize the many stories that make up Virginia’s Black history.

Did you know? In 2018, Richmond became home to Virginia’s first official Black Pride celebration, organized by the United Gay Racial Equality Council (UGRC). Founded in Richmond, UGRC works to uplift, support, and advocate for Black LGBTQ+ communities through education, outreach, and community-building efforts.

At BHMVA, we believe that preserving history means honoring the diverse experiences, voices, and contributions that have shaped our Commonwealth. Black history is Virginia history, and every story helps us better understand the communities that continue to move us forward.

As we celebrate Pride Month, we acknowledge the individuals and organizations working to create spaces of belonging, visibility, and support for future generations. is dedicated to preserving stories that inspire.

🌟 Meet Community’s Choice Award Nominee: Aneesah Smith
“As a Black q***r woman, this recognition is especially meaningful to me. I know firsthand how important it is to see ourselves reflected in leadership, advocacy, and community spaces. I am grateful to be part of a Richmond community that continues to choose love, visibility, joy, and collective liberation.”

Aneesah Smith is a Belonging Strategist, educator, and advocate dedicated to advancing equity and creating communities where all people can thrive. She serves as the Equity & Inclusion Advisor for the City of Richmond, building partnerships and advancing initiatives that support LGBTQ residents and other historically marginalized communities. With more than 15 years of experience in higher education, diversity, equity, inclusion, and community engagement, Aneesah is currently in the final stage of her doctoral journey. Her research explores how Black people sustain themselves and cultivate joy while navigating predominantly white environments. Through her leadership and service, she works to foster belonging, connection, and collective liberation throughout the Richmond region.

🌟 Meet Community’s Choice Award Nominee: Marquest Calvin
“I would like to thank my entire community for the honor of this nomination. I hold this community close to my heart as it has raised and cultivated me over the years. I am humbled to receive such recognition from a community that I love and serve everyday.”

Marquest Calvin was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia and as a native he has always loved where he was from. He is the current Virginia Godfather of the Iconic House of Ebony. As a leader in the ballroom community, he has always strived to bridge the gap between the communities so that we can celebrate our PRIDE as one. Marquest shares, “I will forever love my city. Richmond is my PRIDE and joy.”

🌟 Meet Community’s Choice Award Nominee: Qing Imzadi
“I am honored to be recognized as a finalist for the Black Pride RVA Community’s Choice Award. This recognition reflects the many mentors, collaborators, and community members who continue to inspire and challenge me. Thank you for seeing value in the work we are building together to create a more connected, equitable, and joyful future.”

Qing Imzadi (he/they/cowboy) is a Black trans community builder, storyteller, and cultural organizer based in Richmond, Virginia. Their work bridges advocacy, arts, leadership development, and community care, creating spaces where LGBTQ+ people can connect, heal, learn, and celebrate themselves. As Program Director at Diversity Richmond and founder of the Virginia Q***r Living Memory Project, Qing is committed to preserving our stories, strengthening our communities, and helping build a future where everyone can live as their full selves. They believe that community is one of our most powerful tools for survival, joy, and liberation.

🌟 Meet Community’s Choice Award Nominee: Pilar Monroe
“The ability to show up as our full, unmasked selves is something that should never be taken for granted. Living authentically is a gift, especially for folks within BIPOC, q***r, and neurodivergent communities. I’m deeply grateful to be a space where people can bring their whole selves and feel a sense of belonging while pursuing their health and fitness goals.”

Pilar Monroe (she/they) is the owner of Empowered Body, a personal training business located in the Manchester area of Richmond. Combining compassion and accountability, Pilar creates a supportive environment where clients feel empowered to take charge of their fitness journey. She believes that every client is the expert of their own experience and fosters a collaborative relationship to help them achieve their goals. They specialize in working with beginners, people experiencing chronic illness, and folks with gender affirming goals.
